ReNamer: The best freeware file renamer? (yes says cybernetnews.com)

file-renamer-1.jpg
Ryan over at cybernetnews.com has a post up on his favorite file renamer, called appropriately, ReNamer.

The cybernetnews.com blog post is here: http://cybernetnews....t-free-file-renamer/
And ReNamer website here: http://www.den4b.com....php?project=ReNamer

I must admit it looks quite compelling, with a simple clean interface that supports chaining of operations and a nice preview window.

--> However, looking at the screenshots I worry that it might be a little low on renaming options compared to some others..

Is it the best? How does it stack up against the shareware competition?
I don't know the answer to that, but there are a few long threads on the DonationCoder forum discussing renamer tools that you might want to check out if you are in the market for a renamer:

Anyone who has tried ReNamer want to chime in with a better replacement?

ps.
Ryan over at Cybernetnews as been absolutely on fire lately, with tons of great posts coming out every days it seems -- I don't know how he's keeping up this pace but it's truly becoming a daily must-read.

Anyone Using OmniPage and PaperPort?

blog clipart
Just when I thought I was weened of of most Scansoft/Nuance programs, they sent me one of those "too good to pass up" upgrade offers.

I had previously used their PDF Converter Pro 3 and had a real love/hate relationship with it. When it works, it is pretty amazing.  However it has a way of throwing errors of the "Must Terminate" variety and usually does that just when you really do not have the time to deal with it.  I also use Dragon Naturally Speaking 9 Professional and get by with it even though they tend not to support any of their products, except for enterprise versions, and then only with a paid support plan.

But a couple of weeks ago I received a promotion offer from Nuance that may be too good to ignore:  OmniPage 16 Professional, with PaperPort 11, PDF Create 4, and a throw-in called MediaRecover. The whole package will cost me $99.99.  I checked Nuance's web site and the full prices for each are OmniPage 16 Pro:  $499.99; PaperPort (but not the Pro version): $99.99; PDF Create 4:  $49.99; and MediaRecover, which I never heard of before: $29.99.  They total $679.96. All for $99.99.

Unbelievable price.  But are the programs worthwhile?  If not, then even at that price, why bother?  The product pages read great, but of course that's Nuance tooting their own horn.  PC Magazine wrote them up pretty good, but I would prefer to hear from someone who has used these applications.

Thanks, Jim

I thought readers of the blog might find this discussion useful if they do a lot of scanning and scan management.

IDEA: Hotspot program

blog clipart
Hi,

Was wondering if anyone knew of a hot spot program, so if i move my mouse to a corner of the screen, a specified shortcut or program would be launched - such as 'Show Desktop' or Launch My Documents.

Would be a handy program to have  - if anyone could code it, that would be great !!!

Read the programs suggested by members (and download a skrommel coding snack)..

IDEA: Virtual Flashlight

blog clipart
I would like to have a software which would create a virtual spotlight or flashlight, wherever mouse pointer moves

Similar tools which work only with MAC:
omniDazzle (http://www.omnigroup...ications/omnidazzle/)
Mousepose (http://boinx.com/mousepose/)

Would like to have more features like 'hiding the mouse pointer' etc..

Thanks, Cheers!

Download the coding snack written to do this..

This is a very nice one, with multiple difficulty levels, maps, and lots of weapons.  Well thought out with some interesting touches like differen enemy AI and boss levels.
