Family/Household Personal Information Organizer/Manager ?I'm looking for an application which helps me organize a whole bunch of misc information which might fall into the category of "if I fall ill or die" such as:
I'm thinking the scope is simply too broad for any single software but I'd like to have everything in one place. I suppose I can use something like MS OneNote (I have inventory already in Excel) but thought perhaps someone might know of something that might fit the bill.

Program or website to track my life or historical events in timeline form?Member cettolox asked on the forum: "I am 36 and my memory is very bad. I was wandering if someone of you has ever come across a program (or better a website) that let one insert on a time line spanning decades his own life event, like the years of school, university, work, family life, ecc... It should come up like a project gantt chart, with the ability of zooming in and out the time scale and insert events with the description, or maybe videos or photos or whatever." In his search he turned up a bunch of very cool sites that let users create public timelines with multimedia content. Here are some programs found so far, with more in the discussion: Xtimeline (http://www.xtimeline.com): "When we developed the timeline tool, our friends thought of many ways to creatively use the timeline. Some of them thought the timeline could become a great public service, a resource for history education and for debate over current issues. Others wanted to create biographical timelines for celebrities and their scandalous relationships. The ability of these timelines to entertain and educate convinced us that other people would enjoy our timeline as much we do. And that's how xtimeline came to have a home of its own." Dandelife (www.dandelife.com): "Dandelife is a place for you to record the events of your life, past and present, public and private. Have you photos and videos online in different places? No worries. Like you, your Dandelife is ultimate mash-up. Live well - we're listening!" Similie (http://simile.mit.edu/timeline/) "Timeline is a DHTML-based AJAXy widget for visualizing time-based events. It is like Google Maps for time-based information. Below is a live example that you can play with. Pan the timeline by dragging it horizontally."As cettolox said, this one isn't a hosted solution, it's a library you can use on your own site. |

Interesting article on OSS licensingNow that the software developing world, and OSS in particular, is in a turmoil thanks to the the imminent release of the GPLv3, I thought it would be a good idea to share this article I discovered time ago, but I forgot to post about. His author, byuu, is a skilled programmer, famous for his contributions to the romhacking scene (including his tough but delightful work in the hacking part of Der Langrisser) and his accurate SNES emulator, bsnes, which its license choice prompted him to write this article, where he share thoughts about the two major OSS licenses, BSD and GPL, the freedom that the two give both to the original programmer and those who want to use the code for their own works, the community behind them, and how the compromises you have to made choosing one or other inclined him to use a custom license to accommodate his needs and ideas on the subject. http://byuu.cinnamon...e=articles/licensing |

Knytt Stories - New Game (plus level editor!) from "Within a Dark Forest" authorThe amazing games of Nicklas Nifflas Nygren have been posted about several times in the past on the donationcoder forum. "Within a Dark Forest" remains one of the most charming games ever made. Now comes word of a brand new game, "Knytt Stories". This looks like it's built using the same basic engine as a previously released game called Knytt, which doesn't quite live up to the masterpiece of Within a Dark Forest, but is still a fantastic achievement. What's more, the game now comes with a powerful level editor, so you can create your own stories and levels and share them with others (!). Hey maybe someone needs to make a Cody level? As soon as you start this game you immediately know you are playing something special. |
