Size of Download in Firefox? Yes with an Addon

Hi all,
Ever since i started using firefox, i would infrequently check the addons sections for addons that do things i wanted in firefox. A few days ago i found the second last one i was looking for, Secure Login, thanks to Carol Haynes. I am at a loss however, when trying to understand why there is no way to see the size of a file download in the download prompt, prior to actually downloading the file. This behavior is provided in other browsers, and is the last feature that my firefox is still lacking. If anyone is aware of such an addon, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could link me, because i cannot find one through the addon page or google.
In case there happens to be any firefox addon gurus around, I imagine all that would be required for a plugin of this kind is that if the Content-Length header exists, display its value (properly formatted i guess) in the download prompt.

Thanks, Ehtyar.

Definitely a great idea, and a useful Addon!

Read about the nice FireFox Addon found by Lashiec that solves this problem..

Instant Boss featured on Lifehacker

instantboss.png
I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with InstantBoss by "our very own app103", a cool little utility that helps you write that report or read just another chapter by telling you when to work and when to take a break. It really works!

Anyway, it was featured on the well-known and respected site Lifehacker today, as the featured Windows download! Apparently Lifehacker discovered Instant Boss through a blog called Mind.

Congratulations, app, and expect a lot of traffic App's Apps!

Congratulations App, that's just wonderful and well deserved

Every time I see InstantBoss mentioned somewhere I get a smile because it's a perfect example of one of the things that makes the DonationCoder.com forum so fun.  For those of you who don't know the history of this program, it started as a request on our Coding Snacks section, which evolved based on user suggestions to the program you see today, and was a fun experience for everyone involved.

If you are a user of InstantBoss, please consider sending app a couple of donationcredits to say thank you:

Alternative to DesktopCoral: Hawkeye ShellInit

hsi-inaction.jpg
There is a strange DonationCoder.com program called DesktopCoral which invisibly blocks off some margin of your screen where maximized applications won't intrude.  This is useful for people who use programs such as Samuraize which can then display info in these areas without programs entering this area.

Here's a similar program called Hawkeye ShellInit, that has some extra features (including multiple margins), and is worth a look for anyone who uses Desktop Coral:

http://www.hawkeyete...cts/freeware.htm#hsi

Hawkeye ShellInit is a small, scriptable application that

    * Creates any number of margins on the screen that maximized windows wont cover (much like the taskbar). In these margins, you can put applications that you always want visible, for instance Winamp, SysMeter, console, chat window, or whatever.
    * Runs applications so it can timely position them or make them transparent.
    * Positions and resizes windows based on window caption or classname. This makes it simple to place the applications you want in the margin area. (Windows has a tendency to move windows out of the margin area because it's trying to reserve that space for the appbar (toolbar) that it thinks is there.)
    * Makes windows transparent based on window caption or classname. Any level between 0 (totally transparent) and 255 (totally visible) can be used. Only available in 2k and XP.
    * Toggles windows "always on top".
    * Doesn't require you to keep it running after you run the script.

RightLoad: Great Free Context Menu Tool for Uploading Images to Ftp and more..

Screenshot - 9_11_2007 , 2_12_58 AM.png
This is something that could be very useful to you if you have an ftp account somewhere, because it automates not just the uploading, but the generation of links to share with others.  A great alternative to using a free (image) hosting site if you have your own ftp.

It's also got some very useful options like automatic thumbnail construction, and more.

This is a donationware program, so if you use it, please consider sending the author a donation to support his work!!

ps. this would be a perfect program to use with Screenshot Captor -- so that you can upload your images to an ftp simply by right-clicking on the images in the thumbnail browser.

RightLoad is a small program that allows you to quickly upload files directly from a Windows folder to your server. Instead of using a complicated FTP client just to upload a few pictures, you just right-click on the files, select the server and target folder and RightLoad will do the rest for you. When all files have been uploaded, RightLoad will automatically generate a list of different links to the files, ready to be copied into your post or website.

DOWNLOAD: http://www.rightload.org

Options:
  • When file exists: Before a file is uploaded, RightLoad will check if a file by that name already exists. If this is the case, you can either overwrite the old file, rename it or cancel that upload. If you do not want RightLoad to ask you what to do every time ('Ask') you can set a default action here.
  • Use passive mode with FTP servers: This is a recommended setting, as it avoids problems that may occur with firewalls or routers. Passive mode prevents the server from trying to establish a connection back to you when uploading.
  • When I'm uploading a picture...: This is the default action to be taken when uploading a picture. Use this to disable the thumbnail dialog and always/never create them.
  • Thumbnail width/height: Here you can set the maximum dimensions of generated thumbnails. The original image's aspect ratio will always be kept, so the actual size of the thumbnails may differ.
  • Show image dimensions in thumbnails: This will add a white bar at the bottom of thumbnails, in which the dimensions of the original image will be displayed.
  • Frame thumbnail: This will put a 1px wide black border around all thumbnails.
  • Show RightLoad in context menu: Here you can choose if you want RightLoad to show up in your Explorer's context (right-click) menu. If disabled, you can only use RightLoad via the Send To menu.
  • Create log file: If you are experiencing problems with RightLoad, this option might help you find the cause. It will log all uploads to a file called log.txt in the program directory.
  • Don't show URLs, just close when done: If you don't want RightLoad to create links for you, you can use this option to make RightLoad close itself as soon as the upload is completed.

A member on the DC forum (OCRman) has started creating a web page comparing OCR products.  Already looks useful..
