I found DonationCoder while looking for a good tool or utility to take screenshots for me and make it easy.
I read through the site and it mentioned that members of non-profits and such are able to request a permanent free key. Since I had published a novel that I give away for free, I decided to apply. They got back to me quickly and offered me a lifetime free key! He is very generous and supports others who also donate to charities, give to non-profits and the public, and serve the community...and the tools offered can be quite handy. I am very glad I found DonationCoder and I tell everyone I know about it if they are looking for good utilities or software!

HelpMaker from Vizacc - A Help Authoring Gem!

blog clipart
I recently needed to write a simple help file for an application I had developed and spent some time looking for an affordable help authoring solution. After trying a few demos of commercial software I stumbled across this superb piece of freeware called HelpMaker from Vizacc.

http://www.vizacc.com/

As well as the text editing application it comes with a range of other tools such as a button maker, pdf creator and so on.

It is so good, I cannot believe it is free and thought I must share this with you all. Appologies if this is old news and everyone already knows about it.

I just played with it briefly and it looks like an incredible tool.
It's not going to replace Help+Manual for me, but that's an expensive tool and this is completely free, which is hard to believe.

My only problem was it was erroring for me when trying to produce PDF files.  If they can get the PDF file generation to work and work well, this is going to be the must have free/low-cost help maker.  Outstanding !

Adblock Plus: the nuclear plug-in (nice blog post)

Interesting article and blog essay on Adblock Plus, a FireFox plugin to remove ads from web pages.

Adblock Plus: the nuclear plug-in
Adblock Plus, the Firefox browser plug-in that erases advertisements from web pages, is a killer of a killer app - or at least it would be if it became widely popular. Right now, it sits like a coyote at the edge of the net, quietly eyeing all the businesses it would happily devour.

The plug-in, writes Noam Cohen in today's New York Times, has the potential to be an "extreme menace to the online-advertising business model. After an installation that takes but a minute or two, Adblock usually makes all commercial communication disappear. No flashing whack-a-mole banners. No Google ads based on the search terms you have entered. From that perspective, the program is an unwelcome arrival after years of worry that there might never be an online advertising business model to support the expense of creating entertainment programming or journalism, or sophisticated search engines, for that matter."

Fate by Numbers is a FMV adventure game, developed by a group of students from the Netherlands as their graduation project.

Switcher2: Expose Clone (Window Arranger) for Windows

Screenshot - 9_2_2007 , 8_30_16 PM_thumb.png
Cybernetnews heaps praise on this window-switching/arranging tool for windows.

There is no doubt in my mind that Switcher is the best Exposé clone ever made for Windows, and only Vista users get to bask in the features that this free program has to offer. Switcher 2 Beta has just raised the bar several notches by adding features Apple’s own Exposé doesn’t even have!

Among many other things the new Switcher has tremendously improved the smoothness of its animation.
