I found Process Tamer through Google because I was tired of Dropbox eating 50% CPU at startup.Dropbox works great when you only have a few GB of stuff and only make small changes. But when you are routinely making thousands of changes to a terabyte, it slows down considerably. Anyhoo neat software from you guys and thanks.Owen

Programming Can Ruin Your Life: A Fantastic Blog Essay on the Mind of a CoderI was going to post the in the Developer's section of our forum but in my view it's too important for that. I urge all programmers and loved ones of programmers to read this essay. It may seem pessimistic but it's beautifully written and better captures any description of the pitfalls (and amazing drive) of programmer-centric mindset that i have ever read. I think most programmers will recognize some of themselves in this essay -- but it's real value may be to those people who live with coders and want some insight into why they are the way they are. So if you're a coder with a significant other, print this out and give your loved one a copy to read. It may help them understand why you are the way you are.. ...Programming changes the way you think... posted by mouser

Grow Island: Flash Game of the WeekIf you've never played a "grow" game, basically they are a genre of casual games where at each turn you choose some action to perform from a small set, and the world evolves a little bit between each action. Often, you can only perform each action only once, so that the game comes down to determining what *order* to perform each of your actions, with each action affecting the environment and thus how the subsequent actions unfold. It's a fun example of how simplifying gameplay can still lead to a fun and interesting experience. Grow Island is a really beautifully animated, unpredictable grow game puzzle -- as much of a toy as a game. But there is an objective (a way to "win") -- get each object to its maximum level of development. Read the review on JayIsGames for some more context about the author and the series. http://shingakunet.c...4301/0285/index.html |

Mini-Review: Kaspersky Internet Security 7Basic Info
Intro: The field of desktop antivirus and "Internet security" is pretty large these days. Despite having been around for quite some time, there's still a great deal of variety between the approach and quality of the offerings. I've been through many of them, driven in equal parts by upgrade pricing and reported quality. I've been using Kaspersky Internet Security 7 for about 10 days now. I installed as part of a complete rebuild of my system following a bad infection that ruined my whole OS, under the watch of Panda (which the virus managed to deactivate). So I was looking to lean far more toward the quality side of the equation, rather than pricing. |

IrfanPaint - a painting plug-in for IrfanViewIrfanPaint is a freeware plug-in that adds painting features to IrfanView. It is being developed by Matteo Italia (in collaboration with Irfan Skiljan). This plugin requires a modified IrfanView exe (that is included with the plugin) "since it must include a call to the dll of the plugin". I just renamed the original exe and extracted the zip-file and it works well so far, given the case that it is still in beta.. btw, to invoke the plug-in, load an image in IrfanView and press F12. http://www.mitalia.net/irfanpaint/ |

The Mario Level That Plays ItselfIt's things like this that keep me from losing faith in mankind. It's an easter egg in a mario game from nintendo, which is designed in such a way that the environmental objects interact in such a way that the player's character will be moved through the entire level to completion, without the player actually ever performing any action with the controller, like a Rube Goldberg machine. Think of it as a little humorous play on passivity. http://my.break.com/...spx?ContentID=359313 |
