CoScripter: Control Firefox Through Scripting

CoScripter.JPG
IBM has released some cool technology. This can be very useful for web-based app developers and site administrators among other things.

Simplifying web-based processes.

CoScripter is a system for recording, automating, and sharing processes performed in a web browser such as printing photos online, requesting a vacation hold for postal mail, or checking bank account information. Instructions for processes are recorded and stored in easy-to-read text here on the CoScripter web site, so anyone can make use of them. If you are having trouble with a web-based process, check to see if someone has written a CoScript for it!

VirtualBox - An Open Source Virtual Machine

VirtualBox.png
Hi, I know it's not usually the done thing the report on every little update to an app but VirtualBox has added so much since it was last mentioned here that I felt it deserved a revisit.

Specifically version 1.5 has added support for Vista x64 as a host OS and with new features like clipboard sharing and seamless window it is now really easy to use it as a safe place to test an application while still working primarily from the host OS. Check it out.

CodeGear (Borland) Announces RAD Studio 2007 (Delphi, C++ Builder, etc.)

Screenshot - 9_7_2007 , 3_34_10 AM.png
This is sort of big news to those of us who use Delphi or C++ Builder..

CodeGear, a leader in developer tools, today announced CodeGear RAD Studio 2007 , a new version of the award-winning rapid application development (RAD) environment for Microsoft® Windows. The new offering is designed to help developers more quickly and cost effectively build rich database-driven Windows and Web applications. Previously code-named "Highlander," CodeGear RAD Studio delivers Delphi® for Win32®, C++Builder® and new Delphi .NET 2.0 development in a single integrated environment. It is the only integrated development environment (IDE) solution that supports rapid application development of both native Microsoft Windows and .NET applications on and for Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, and Vista. This allows developers to build Web, client/server and desktop Windows applications on all three platforms, and to deploy to any of the three. "CodeGear RAD Studio gives developers the flexibility to use the operating system that best suits their needs, while developing for multiple Windows operating systems, including Windows Vista, and the Web," said Nick Hodges, Delphi Product Manager at CodeGear.

New features and capabilities include:
Enhanced Delphi support for the Microsoft Vista Aero user interface - including themed applications, Visual Component Library (VCL) and VCL.NET support for 3D user interface effects and animations, transparent glassing, File and Task Dialog components. VCL is CodeGear's visual, component-based framework for Windows.
Delphi language support for Microsoft .NET 2.0 (compatible with .NET 3.0) and ASP.NET 2.0 development. ASP.NET is a set of technologies in the .NET framework for building Web applications and XML Web services.

Not Just Free Games

playthisthing.JPG
Greg Costikyan, CEO and co-founder of Manifesto Games, and this year's recipient of the International Game Developer's Association Maverick Award, has opened a new website, Play This Thing.

Our basic idea is to feature one interesting game a day--to point you to the most interesting, creative, innovative, or just plain weird games out there. About half will be free, and about half games with some kind of free play option that you have to pay for if you want the full game--with, on Tuesdays, a tabletop game (board, roleplaying, or card game). Some of those will be free, too, as a PDF download or the like.

So it's a game review/commentary site, if you will--but since we're pointing to games we think are interesting, you won't often find negative reviews here: the point is to feature the good stuff.

And while your at it, check out Manifesto Games' main site.

We're here to create for games what indie music and film provide: an audience and market for creativity and individual vision, defying the big publishers' mediocrity and hype. Join the indie games revolution today!
