Mouse wheel enhancement for Windows

blog clipart
I ran across this little gem at Lifehacker http://www.lifehacker.com/ today.

It allows your mouse to scroll in *any* window or pane your mouse is in.
Not being able to do that has been an annoyance of mine for a long time.
I'm happy to report it works great, and the tray icon is cute (not a requirement but fun anyway).

from the site:
"The prime purpose of the KatMouse utility is to enhance the functionality of mice with a scroll wheel, offering 'universal' scrolling: moving the mouse wheel will scroll the window directly beneath the mouse cursor (not the one with the keyboard focus, which is default on Windows OSes). This is a major increase in the usefullness of the mouse wheel.

Another feature involves the wheel button. Since the wheel button is not consistently used in Windows, KatMouse can use it for a kind of task switching: with a click of the wheel button you can push a window to the buttom of the stack of windows that is your desktop, making a recovered window the active window."

DE Coffee Manager

decm.png
The most fun we had in our office since friday (when we installed the new coffee machine):
The Coffee Manager. There's an administrator who makes a coffee group, the DECM manages who's turn it is to make coffee. You can then select what drink you want and all orders will be delivered to the right person. You can even print out statistics.

Are you always the one who's stuck getting coffee for your colleagues? How does Keith in accounts take his coffee again? You're going to get a coffee, but is there anyone else who wants one too? The Coffee Manager is the answer!
The Coffee Manager is a small application for your work computer, which asks everyone in the office if they would like a coffee, then gathers all the drinks requests and selects a person to make the trip to the coffee machine! The Coffee Manager can also present you with a graphic display of statistics to chart the drinking habits and rituals of your team.

Microsoft's Silverlight

Silverlight has been mentioned as Microsoft's potential Flash killer.

Techchrunch has an EXCELLENT write-up about this new technology, and you can read it here: http://feeds.feedbur...crunch/~3/113229315/

Hackety Hack — the Coder's Starter Kit

hackety.jpg
Coders of the world, be fruitful and multiply yourselves! At least that's one idea behind a clever new effort called, Hackety Hack, which holds — among other things — that coding has gotten too damn expensive lately with too little return. So, "let's take things into our own hands and bring hacking to the young folks." Even comes with a cheatsheet.

Hackety Hack was not written in seclusion for my imaginary friends. It was written with the help of fifty budding hackers who I personally mentored. Most had tried to program, but had failed to catch on. Some wanted to teach their kids.
