Nature Studio - Cool Shareware Program

NIStudio.jpg
This is a shareware program (which i usually don't post about), but it looks pretty fun if you have some suitable pictures..

"Transform your real-world photo into an animated nature scene by adding a wide array of water, weather and sound effects to your own photos and images
...
The best thing is that you can share your excitement with others. You can create a screensaver and present it as a gift to your beloved or friend, publish it on your website and let your guests or customers download it for free.
...
Nature Illusion Studio provides you with a point-and-click design environment. In just a few clicks you can add various water effects, weather effects like snow and rain, and background sounds that recreate natural phenomena with much realism and accuracy."

A Very Simple Ethical Principle for Search: Google Fails Miserably

blog clipart
An extremely simple principle:

Shouldn't we want a web search engine which doesn't have huge financial (or other) incentives to send people to certain pages?

I mean, it sounds insanely obvious and yet the #1 search engine on the planet, by far, has it's entire business model based on people visiting pages with its ads on it, and is increasingly creating content and services that it benefits from sending traffic to.

I would concede that Google is one of the more ethical giant corporations around, but that isn't saying all that much.

Don't we need to find and switch to search engines which don't have such an overwhelming financial incentive to send us to their pages and pages of people that pay them?  Is that even possible in this world?

note: one of my oldest friends and someone who has more integrity than anyone i know works for google; this isn't really a knock against what google is currently doing as much as it is a comment about what i view as an inherent and unacceptable situation in search.

Nine tips for dealing with home office isolation

SNAG-0345.png
Working from home is totally sweet, right? You can earn money without even changing out of your PJs, blast music as loud as you want and talk to your Star Wars toy collection in order to replicate actual human contact.

Okay well, maybe it's a little unhealthy to stay at home all the time. Check out this list of nine tips for dealing with home office isolation and put the Jar Jar Binks doll away, for crying out loud.

PC World Editor Resigns - Bravo!

Screenshot - 5_2_2007 , 10_45_44 PM_thumb.png
Sounds like someone with integrity

Award-winning Editor-in-Chief Harry McCracken of PC World resigned Tuesday over disagreements with the magazine's publisher regarding stories critical of advertisers, according to sources.
...
McCracken informed staffers in an afternoon meeting Wednesday that he decided to resign because Colin Crawford, senior vice president, online, at IDG Communications, was pressuring him to avoid stories that were critical of major advertisers.

Wired News reported Wednesday evening that McCracken quit after Crawford killed a draft story titled "Ten Things We Hate About Apple."

Level - Copy files from various sources into one flat folder (free DC coding snack util)

Levelcopies files from multiple sources into a flat folder. It can be invoked from the commandline. For every source you can specify a file filter, and currently therre are switches to include/exclude subfolders, whether or not you want to overwrite all files that already exist or only older ones. You can have unlimited sources (afaik) When you start it from explorer you see this:

I can imagine that it would be handy to use to consolidate all your music from different pcs into one folder.

Inspired by this forum I have been getting to grips with AutoHotkey and my first product is a utility I wrote for my work here at Angus College to collect all the student/staff portraits in one central folder for use in our staff directory. We have 11 different folders across the network, and I was not sure where new pictures were added to, but always needed the latest updates to be available on the intranet. Anyway, I am sure it will be of some use to someone (and I am quite proud of it  :-[)

Best Buy Geek Squad Confession (long and interesting)

Screenshot - 5_2_2007 , 5_09_35 PM_thumb.png
...
The procedure taken to catch up on the computers was to take any computer currently in line to be fixed, or being dropped off to be fixed, and--if it had a software or operating system issue--wipe it, and reinstall Windows. Then, when the customer was given back his or her computer, an agent would inform them that due to an error, their data was lost. If they protested, the agent would be considerate, but in the end, if need be, point out #10 and their signature beneath it. For those that do not understand "wipe", it refers to completely deleting all data off the hard drive, and re-installing a fresh version of the Windows operating system. One supportive comment given by a manager, after a obligatory chuckle, was, "Oh well, they should have bought a data backup!" I never took part in this strategy, thankfully, as I was forced onto the floor to help people with their purchases after I was caught by a manager informing customers it would be better if they went to the Geek Squad a few towns over until we catch up.
...
Now, the difference between a Geek Squad agent and a hobo with a thumb drive is that the hobo with a thumb drive has the potential to efficiently fix your problem.
