Map of online communities (xkcd)

mooc.jpg
xkcd
A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language

This comic is one of my daily stops, the humor is so nerdy it almost hurts.
I just love it. Especially since for quite some of those jokes you have to have quite some education to get them.

This is the latest comic, a map of online communities.
And there went quite some thought into it too. Note the compass rose and all the little details.

Even "your base" is there ;-)

The Shopping Bags (tv show)

I can't believe i'm posting this, but damn it this show has won me over, so please forgive me!

It's sort of a low budget consumer reports show, and they strike just the right tone.
Hosts are smart and non-nonsense too. I'm impressed! (It's also a rare show that a couple could really enjoy together).

Recent shows have compared: cigars, t-shirts, garbage bags, cake mixes, and so on.

Delivering practical consumer information for those who like to shop, award-winning journalists Anna Wallner and Kristina Matisic take their favourite pastime to new levels, putting a wide range of products and services to the test.

The Shopping Bags is the one-stop shop for anyone looking to make educated purchasing decisions in today's marketplace. Whether searching for new electronic equipment, stocking the pantry or wondering which vitamin supplements are best, the show provides inside information to help everyone become a smarter shopper. Fun, fast-paced and entertaining, The Shopping Bags tells viewers what they need to know before they buy.

Sound Borb: Ambient Sound Generator (free and simple with user packs)

Screenshot - 5_2_2007 , 2_16_38 AM.png
There are quite a few ambient sound generators out there -- what's special about this one is that there are almost no parameters to mess with, and instead you load a "set" of sounds, and users can submit new sound sets to the website, which are pretty coool.

Sound Borb is an audio ambience generating system. The generative nature of Sound Borb's audio engine means that once you hit play, the ambience you're listening to will never end. It will never go to the next track. It will never loop. If you want to listen to the ocean, you can listen to the ocean from now until your electricity goes out. Various ambiences are available for download on the download page, and you can also create your own and post them for download here, if you're so inclined.

Parameters are kept to a minimum, so as to make Sound Borb easy to use. Just load an ambience, and start listening. You can adjust the overall volume, the intensity (how much activity is occuring in the sound), and the happiness of the ambience. Or you can set the intensity and happiness parameters to auto, and sit back and listen.

Mini-Review: Wubi - Painless, partion-free WindowsXP/Ubuntu dual booting

Wubi - Painless, partion-free WindowsXP/Ubuntu dual booting

Wubi is an Ubuntu installer that you run from inside Windows.  It installs Ubuntu to a virtual disk file without making any changes to your partitions or doing any formats.  As such, it should be completely safe to install.  Since it is utilizing a virtual disk file on your hard drive, it has the advantage over live cds of retaining changes, installations, etc through rebooting of the system and allowing you to install as much as you want as long as you have the hard drive space to spare.  It also boots considerably faster than a live cd, and is almost as fast as a regular installation.  Unlike live cds, however, it does take up hard drive space and obviously leaves traces behind.

The Wubi program is a mere 9.9mb, but you will need the most recent ubuntu alternate iso.  You can either download it youself and put it in the same directory as Wubi before you run it, or you can have the program download it for you.  I chose to download it myself from a close mirror rather than letting the program download it.
