A New Version (v1.9) of ObjectDock just released

Screenshot - 4_26_2007 , 4_40_02 PM_thumb.png
If you like eye candy, you'll like this sweet looking application launcher. Have fun with it!

Stardock has just released their OjbectDock 1.9. It’s a free download that allows you to add a dock to Windows.  We’ve mentioned RocketDock previously which is almost the same thing made by the same company. However, ObjectDock is packed with some extra features that RocketDock doesn’t have.  They essentially aim to copy the dock that you’d have if you were using a Mac, and they do a great job with it.  If you want to purchase the plus version...

I also wanted to let people know that I won't be posting any more blogs for a while to take care of some business stuff. So, if you've been thinking to yourself "I sure wish I could blog those posts", this is your big chance. Just get with Mouser and begin your training.  --Ken

Getting things done with Tracks

tracks-logo-dark.png
I am very much into this social networking stuff and thus happily played around with netvibes.com. I have my many feeds spread across several tabs now. On my tab technews I am rssding ("reading" plus "rss") NewsForge: The Online Newspaper for Linux and Open Source.

Today they fed me this: Getting things done with Tracks, which leads to the full article at linux.com.

To make a long story short: The heading (GTD) caught my eye, so I felt I had to tell you about this. Apparently the author uses a software called Tracks to GTD.

I was determined to adopt the popular organizational method. I searched for a solid software tool to track projects and next actions, and found dozens of desktop-oriented applications to choose from. One of the GTD axioms is to collect all of your tasks, projects, and lists in one place; since I regularly use four PCs and laptops and a mobile phone, finding a GTD-aware tool that would run as a Web app was paramount. I settled on Tracks; it is open source, easy to use, and accessible from anywhere.

I have not tried to GTD, with or without Tracks; however I remembered it was a rather important "thing" (for lack of a better word) on donationcoder.com. I hope someone will GMTD (get more things done) with tracks, or at least G1TD (get one thing done). While I didn't take active part in the GEO experiment I do have it in the back of my mind constantly.

Envelope printing freeware?

blog clipart
Is there a basic free envelope printing program out there suitable for occasional personal use, not batch printing or label printing?  Shareware programs of the type seem relatively expensive but so far my web search has turned up nothing comparable in freeware. I'm hoping someone has had better luck.

The Virtues of Monoculture

blog clipart
This is an interesting commentary on "the Microsoft way" versus "the open source way". Each has their benefits and drawbacks. A worthwhile read for developers in either camp.

From The Virtues of Monoculture
So what’s good about a monoculture, and why does Microsoft win so often when people make a decision about platforms? Largely because what the open source community sees as a strength, people trying to get a job done in the real world see as a weakness. We celebrate the diversity of choices available to solve a problem and call it freedom. IT managers and CIOs look at it and call it chaos, confusion and uncertainty.

JLog: Cool free (open source) generic remote log file management/watching

Main Window.png
This isn't a tool for everyone, but server administrators might find it quite useful:

JLog is a powerfull tool that helps to manage multiple log files in a cluster environment. I developped it because I'm a technical expert of IBM WebSphere Portal and I have to check regulary more than 300 log files from a cluster (WebSphere SystemOut, SystemErr, WebSphere Portal, custom Application Log).

Without such a tool, it's impossible to have a global view of the messages in logs, you will allways miss something. It's impossible to look at all log files.

With Jlog, the log review task is much more faster and efficiant.
Functionalities

JLog can be used without any modification of the application. The only need is an ftp or sftp access to the log files. You don't have to customize your logs or change any configuration of your application.

JLog main goal is to download all the log files using ftp and then parse each one with the defined parser to collect information (exceptions or messages) and display the result of the parsing in a table. The table displays each messsage found and how many were found. If you click a line in the table a Detail Dialog appears and shows how many exceptions are found in each log file. If you double-click again in the detail dialog the corresponding log file is opened in the defined text editor to the message line for further analysis.

It can also compute statistics from data collected in the log file (for instance WebService average response time, min, mas, ...).

JLog supports natively GZip files (parsing and display in text editor).

Once the logs are downloaded, you can also search any String in the logs.

Another functionality is the export of the parsing result to a file that can be opened using Microsoft Excel or an Excel like application, or HTML. You can also merge all the export files to one file that will show the exception count daily in order to be able to analyse the log evolution in time.

JLog can also be automaticly executing with a command line. This helps to automate reports creation using crontabs in Solaris for instance.

The OMGWTF Programming Contest - Design Purposefully Buggy Code and Win

Screenshot - 4_24_2007 , 11_39_08 PM_thumb.png
Unlike other programming contests, the goal of the OMGWTF contest is not to flex your algorithmic muscles and solve some abstract computational problem like you might in an ACM contest. Nor is it like the International Obfuscated C Coding Contest; in fact, writing code like that would be a surefire way to lose this contest. Instead, the goal of the OMGWTF contest is to solve an incredibly simple problem using the most obscenely convoluted way imaginable. And for this first contest, the simple problem is to build and implement the logic for a four-function calculator.
