Workrave - Repetitive Strain Injury prevention software

workrave-exercises.gif
It's really useful for chaps who tend to get very involved in work.
Workrave sort of gives a 30 second countdown timer and then locks your input devices so that you can see the normal screen but nothing works.
That's a "microbreak" - the default is one every three minutes!!
A rest break is about 5 minutes long and can be set at particular time intervals
You can also skip or postpone the break notifications

Homepage: http://workrave.org/

And then there is a set of pictures of a (virtual) young girl showing you various exercises. You simply have to do as she does, so you get time to give your brain a break.  See http://workrave.org/screenshots/windows/

Newsletter for April 21st, 2007 - Codename "Death and Taxes"

Greetings!

April is tax month in the United States, and we know how stressful that can be! That's why we decided to only put out one newsletter this month instead of our normal two, to avoid distracting you too much.  But now that it's past, you might need some help regaining your sanity.  So to help you recover we've got a ton of easy and super-fun flash games for you in this month's newsletter, and some humorous website discoveries (do not miss the medieval tech support video).  And if all this stress has given you some back aches, don't miss the back health site in the "Tips, Tricks, and Techniques" section of the newsletter.

April was also a very interesting and busy month on the site due to getting a glowing recommendation from Ian "Gizmo" Richards in his Tech Support Alert newsletter.   I also had some real life visitors from the forum to my new apartment, at the first DonationCoder.com dinner.  If you missed it don't feel sad, we'll have another very soon, and you are all welcome!

And if you noticed that we took a break from rounding up shareware discounts this month, don't worry, they will be back in May.

28.8k, 33.6k, and 56k Modem Emulator

snail.png
Some designers have taken the rise of broadband to mean that graphic intensive pages are now acceptable, that 600k Flash intros are suddenly desirable, and that otherwise bombarding the user with bandwidth-hungry sites is commendable. Sadly, plenty of users are still on dial-up, using 28k, 33.6k or 56k modems, and it's all too easy to forget that when you're surfing on a high speed office connection or even your home broadband.

This guy has made available a throttled proxy, to allow you to experience what it would be like to view your site on various dialup speeds.

Online Marketing for Beginners

SNAG-0325.png
A somewhat humorous, yet informative introduction to search engine optimization and online marketing.

It is amazing how many people hire online marketers without the faintest idea of what online marketers actually do. Search engine optimisation (SEO) is fairly simple - SEOs will try and improve your site's performance, usually by trying to leverage their knowledge of how search engines work and tricks they can use to make sites seem more relevant than they actually are to specific keywords.

Marketing online, though, need not have anything to do with search engines. Search engines are irrelevant - good positions and traffic are a by-product of effective online marketing.

Unfortunately, after educating a client on what online marketing is, they usually assume that if they pay you a few hundred pounds, you can make their site compete with the very best out there.

Razorwire and Overlord are two of the best hackers in the world. They can hack almost anything: computers, microwaves, jars of peanut butter…if you can name it they can hack it.

This is really great stuf!!!
