I decided to donate because I value the work of developers outside the commercial mainstream, and the app I wanted to use (Screenshot Captor) appears to have all the features I need in a screenshot utility, and then some.
Thanks for your work and I wish you every success in your endeavours.

JayIsGames.com Flash Game Programming Competition #5 Starts

cgdc5_494x289.jpg
JayIsGames.com gets posted about regularly here on DC.  We were linking to Jay's great game reviews way back when it was just Jay alone reviewing occasional games.  It's wonderful to see the competitions on the site bring such great new talent to light.  If you haven't checked out some of the past entries, they are as good as they get.

So here is competition #5.  If you ever wanted to make a flash game, now is the time:

For the 5th Casual Gameplay Design Competition, we are asking for entries that incorporate this theme: UPGRADE. You are free to interpret that any way you choose; however, the extent to which your game addresses the theme is left up to the competition judges to decide. Use your imagination and be creative. We will select the best entries submitted to represent the competition just like we have done before. Impress us with your game design and production skills and you will score fame, recognition, prizes, as well as a proper review of your work by the JIG Casual Gameplay review staff.

ps. Cody, the mascot bird/duck of DonationCoder.com is dying to be in a game, so keep that in mind if you are looking for a starring character for your game

Ok, so here's a modified version of jgpaiva's WinManagement AHK script (my first try at a "real" AHK script).

Here 'a description of the hotkeys/features (these are mere suggestions : to modify the hotkeys, just modify the script) :

WinKey + Home : move window to upper left corner
WinKey + End : move window to bottom left  corner
WinKey + PgUP : move window to upper right corner
WinKey + PgDn  : move window to bottom right corner

NANY 2008 - New Freeware Apps

screen.png_thumb.png
New Apps for the New Year (NANY) 2008

Help us celebrate the new year with a bunch of brand new freeware programs!

It's time for the results of our annual programming challenge. The coders on our site were asked to:
  • Release a new freeware/donationware program of any kind, by Jan 1, 2008
  • It must not have been released prior to Dec 1, 2007

Some of the programs are rather specialized and whimsical, some are just a little silly, and substantial and serious.  But you'll probably find something that you find useful.

Do you have an mp3 collection? Use "WTF!? Music Info" to generate charts showing the statistics of your collection.  Do you need help staying motivated to keep to your new year's resolutions? Try "Point Motivator", an innovative motivational tool and tracking diary.

Browse and download these brand new freeware programs and over a dozen more.

Congratulations to all the programmers who participated.  As always, if you find a program you like please consider making a small donation to the author.

This year's 2008 NANY programs are available: here.
Last year's 2007 NANY programs are also still available here.

Can one assign default a program to always open file without extension?
When you right-click/open with... the box "always use this program" is grayed out.
Any workarounds?

Office suite for my mom?

blog clipart
I know the question of "software that my mom can use" is cliche, but it's actually what I need to find. My mom just got a new computer for Christmas, and was disappointed not to find any software on it (I think she's lucky to have avoided all the crap on a typical new computer).

Anyway, I need to set her up with an office suite.

She needs this both for her presentation (a minister, meaning she'll be writing sermons and maybe making small presentations to groups), as well as her studies (for a Doctor of Divinity, needing to write grad-student quality papers, do presentations for class, including some light charting). She's not a very sophisticated computer user at all; for anything but the most basic operations, she'll find the answer (usually by calling me*), and write down the sequence of menu options so she can do it again later.

Would anyone like to offer opinions as to which choices would be better or worse?

File Propagator: File Search and Replace

I am trying to find a program that allows me search for and replace files with a source file.

Example:

I have a large directory structure that has numerous folders and subfolders.  There are many scripts that execute from this structure, and some rely on psexec.exe.  Since many people access this structure, a copy of psexec.exe is stored in each of the script directories instead of one central location.  The problem comes in when I want to update psexec.exe to the newest version.  Finding and replacing each old one with a new one is a tedious task.

So, I would like a program that can search for every instance of a specific file name and replace it with a source file that I specify.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
