Fireday - Blog Reviews New Firefox Extensions Every Friday - Nice Archive

Screenshot - 1_16_2008 , 4_37_38 PM_thumb.png
The DCS Media blog has a special feature every friday where they review a couple of firefox extensions and rate them.  Nice bite-sized reviews that are helpful.

Fireday is a series for reviewing Firefox extensions every Friday (Friday + Firefox = Fireday) and selecting the best and worst extensions that are out there so you know which ones to use and which ones need adjusting.

The entire list is below so find the extension that best suits your needs and drop a line to see if there is an extension you want reviewed.

Anyone know any other firefox extension review blogs/sites?

Nice little write-up of DonationCoder in usa today "tech_space" blog

Screenshot - 1_15_2008 , 2_49_26 AM_thumb.png
I don't usually post these, but DC member Hamradio found a really sweet mention of DC in a USA Today blog today that I wanted to share.

The DonationCoder NANY (New Apps for the New Year) 2008 challenge wrapped up with an assortment of cool little applications, many for Windows folk but some accessible to anyone with a Net connection. If you don't know about DonationCoder, it's a swell little site for programmers and other cussed eccentrics -- donation-based, platform-independent, and one of the few places on the Web you can (within limits) inquire about having someone maybe cook you up the oh-so-specific program you're needing.

I like their attitude a lot, obviously, and the 2008 challenge did not disappoint. Browse through the entries at the link above, and don't miss CoinCalc, which -- given some basic info from you -- can estimate how much change you've managed to squirrel away in that jar on the bookcase. I had some fun with it; give it a try and see how it does for you. It's a nice introduction to the "donationware" sensibility, and you may just find a community of like-minded souls to boot.

Screenshot - 1_14_2008 , 2_14_51 PM_thumb.png
Today is a great day for those of you who love the genre of Tower Defense flash games, with the release of Flash Element TD 2.

JayIsGames.com has a nice long write up about why this is such a good thing, so i'll just let you go and read it there.  It's a very nice game, with some new ideas and a ton of personality and strategy.

Introduction to the Special Mini-Newsletter Edition

Greetings to everyone from the year 2008!  This is a special mini-version of our normal newsletter.  Instead of reviewing the best posts on the forum from the last few weeks like we normally do, this special edition will just briefly mention three new big things on our site this month that we wanted to draw to your attention.  We'll be back next month with our regular newsletter format.

1. New Apps for the New Year (N.A.N.Y.) 2008 - Programs Released

This month the coders on our site unveiled a dozen new freeware programs to welcome in the new year.  Some of the programs have received a lot of attention, and some are just plain strange.

Among the collection you'll find a unique new motivational program by mouser called Point Motivator, which let's you set up rewards and activities and track your progress towards achieving your own personal high score; a whimsical online tool that has taken the web by storm, CoinCalc.com, for estimating the value of the jar of coins on your shelf; a trio of very cool plugins for the Find and Run Robot program, and many more.

2. Best of the Web from 2007 - The Best Stuff You Never Saw

At the end of every year we always take some time to dig through the entire past year of posts on our forum, and create our annual "Best of the Web" retrospective roundup.

Over 46,000 posts were made on the forum in 2007, and from those posts a collection of some of the most entertaining discoveries and debates have been featured in our 2007 Best of the Web edition.  It's packed full of rare treasures you won't want to miss.

3. Massive January Shareware Giveaway+Discount Celebration

As part of our upcoming fundraiser and our three-year celebration of DonationCoder.com, we are excited to bring our supporting members a very special month of discounts and giveaways.

You'll find big discounts on some of the best shareware on the internet, plus a ton of copies to give away to our supporting members. The list includes the programs that you asked us to get discounts on, as well as new discounts and giveaways from some of our favorite companies.   A special thanks to DC member carl thorpe, who arranged for most of these discounts.

SquidNote: Create online Greeting Cards that many people can sign

Fun idea.

SquidNote is an online group greeting [card] service – we help you create a card and then circulate it to other people (around the office, around friends/family, etc) to have everyone sign the card before it gets delivered to a lucky recipient.
