Delphi Contest: Create Fancy Applications for Fame & Glory

SNAG-0309.png
If you are like me, you like experimenting - creating pieces of Delphi code just to learn something new and create something interesting. If nothing else, to amaze your coworkers / family / yourself.

Sometimes the funny code I write actually does something smart - but most of the time - it's just to see if *this* can be done in Delphi.

Here's an idea that originated from this idea of mine: let's create a simple Delphi programming contest - the task is to code a fancy-do_nothing_smart application (a piece of code) in Delphi!
Let this one be for fame and glory - no material prizes will be given to any contestants - all of us will code for fame and glory - pure rivalry :)

Nothing smart but fancy - and this is all what this contest is about: to create a "useless" application in delphi - one that is nice to see and one can learn something from it.

Hm .. ah .. ok. Rules are about to change! By looking at some of the "useless" applications I have created for delphi.about.com over the years ... it seems there are quite a few that are pure gems: Ruler is a must, Zoomer is just great. Ok, I'm not shy ;)
New rule: it is ok for the fancy Delphi application you submit to useful!

Sounds fun!

Flash Tower Defense Game of the Week: Strategy Defense 3

Screenshot - 1_26_2008 , 3_32_12 AM_thumb.png
Here's a remarkable new tower defense game called Strategy Defense 3.
In addition to playing pretty darn well, it has some very cool features and beautiful graphics.

Multiple maps and difficulty levels, more variety of objects than i've ever seen -- amazing stuff.

I love this genre because it really embodies the concept of "casual" games and it's great to see how different designers innovate.

Strategy Defense does a few really cool new things.  First of all, there is very little tower building or upgrading, most of what you do is just select which new unit to build when you get new money, making this one of the simpler games to actually play.  But there is still a lot of strategy involved.

The variety of levels also definitely requires some strategic thinking -- some of the levels require only long distance attacking for example.

A really wonderful addition to the genre and a great first tower defense game for those who have never played one before.

SelectoSurf - Open plaintext URLs flexibly from any program

ahk.png
;------------------------------------------------------------------
; Select plaintext in any program and hit the hotkey (ctrl+space)
; If the text looks like a url or website name (like donationcoder.com), it will be opened.
;  otherwise a google search will be conducted with the phrase.
;  urls will be cleaned of unnesc. punctuation and split-lines will be merged.
;
; Compiled exe and .ahk source script included.
;------------------------------------------------------------------

There are a lot of scripts that do this kind of thing, but i still thought it would be nice to have another that people could customize.

  • Just select a url or something that looks like a url in any program and hit hotkey to open proper web page in browser.
  • Fixes urls that are malformed (missing prefixes, extra surrounding characters, etc.)
  • If you select a non-url phrase a web search is conducted
  • Compiled exe included that uses default browser and hotkey Ctrl+Space, but autohotkey source is provided you can customize
  • Cleans up split-line urls, perfect for email urls

Mini-HowTo: How to make your PC go to quick silent standby sleep (S3 mode)

Screenshot - 1_24_2008 , 2_01_25 PM_ver001_thumb.png
I have a homebuilt spare PC in the bedroom and when it's on it sounds a bit like an airplane (loud).

One of my favorite features of windows that many people don't seem to take advantage of is "Standby Mode", which basically puts your PC into a very low power state, very quickly, that it can very quickly wake up from.  It's a great alternative to shutting down and restarting if you just want to turn your PC off for the night, etc.

BUT

I noticed recently that my PC stopped going into a silent standby mode, for no apparent reason!
What was the cause? How to fix it?

Well, it turns out that there are at least 2 different kinds of Standby modes (S1 and S3) that a PC can go into.  S1 leaves the fans and usb connections on, S3 turns off the fan and usb (this is the quite mode).

And there are several things that can control whether your PC goes into S1 or S3 standby mode.

For me, the answer was to go into the bios and change the bios power setting to "S3 ONLY" mode.

There is also a registry setting that addresses this issue, though it's not clear to me whether you should set this INSTEAD of the bios setting, or in addition to.

For a longer description of related settings see this nice post on the matter: http://thegreenbutto...ms/thread/29899.aspx

From your bios you can also do some nice stuff like configure your power button to go in and out of standby mode.  For a spare bedroom PC this is a great setup -- push the button at any time and the PC wakes up or goes to quiet sleep in seconds.
