Downloadsquad shutting down

Downloadsquad (the popular tech blog with an emphasis on software) is closing down, as a consequence of the AOL/Huffington Post merge. Will anyone miss it or I am alone here?

Whoa.. wow that is crazy. It was a good site.
I wonder what the decisions looked like -- was it just not profitable enough? Or what?

Kickstarter and Indie2GoGo Projects Spotlight - April 11, 2011

DC Member wraith808 has written the first of what we hope will be a weekly series highlighting interesting projects on Kickstarter and IndiGoGo -- projects that are seeking to raise funding from small individual investments; wraith808 writes:

Support your favorite indie project through a safe and convenient outlet through Kickstarter or IndieGoGo.  The projects are all or nothing - they set their goal, and if it's reached, you pay your pledge.  If not, you pay nothing.  It's not about investment, but instead about patronage.  If funded, the project creators own 100% of their work, and you get the satisfied feeling of being a patron of the arts.  And there are a variety of endeavors to fund, from the worlds of music, film, art, technology, design, food, publishing and other creative fields.

Below are some highlights from the sites:
TweetLand
TweetLand-Kick3.png
Goal$7000
End Date2011-05-04
Project Creator(s)Villalobos, Espinoza, Vasquez, Cartin(s)
LocationSan José, Costa Rica
DescriptionSocial networks meet social gaming with Tweet Land, a series of games where gameplay is determined by the real-time actions of Twitter users. With a dash of retro-styling and a super-catchy soundtrack, behold the twitterverse as it becomes a real place you can race through.

Matthew Stover's Overworld
overworld.png
Goal$8500
End Date2011-04-18
Project Creator(s)Moe Suliman
LocationSt Petersburg, FL
Description I want to create an "origin story" comic book series titled: OverWorld, featuring the art of T J Halvorsen (formerly an Inker for Marvel's Incredible Hulk and currently a Penciler for DC's Batman and Robin, Wonder Woman) based on New York Times Best Selling Author Matthew Stover's books "Heroes Die", "Blade of Tyshalle", "Caine Black Knife", his up and coming novel, "His Father's Fist" and their beyond brutal anti-hero Caine. Matthew will also write the story.

Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple
DO.png
Goal$4000
End Date2011-05-24
Project Creator(s)Daniel Solis
LocationOklahoma City, OK
DescriptionDo: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple is a storytelling game about helping people and getting into trouble.

You tell the story of young travelers who mean well, but spend most of their time getting into trouble. You use your creativity and strategy to create a humorous coming of age story. It's like a comedic crossover between Avatar: the Last Airbender, the Little Prince and Kino's Journey.

The Cosmonaut: A Wide-Grip Stylus for Touch Screens
cosmonaut.png
Goal$50000
End Date2011-04-20
Project Creator(s)Dan Provost & Tom Gerhardt
LocationNew York, NY
DescriptionThe Cosmonaut was born out of our desire to have a really great stylus for our iPads. We love to sketch out quick ideas or doodle on our tablets, and using a stylus is much better than a finger for such tasks. We bought several different models currently available on the market but they all suffered the same problem: they were designed to look and feel like a pen. But why? Writing or drawing on the iPad feels nothing like using a pen or pencil. For one, tablets are ideal for low fidelity sketching. Also, it is pretty awkward to rest your palm on the screen of the device because it throws off the capacitive detection. Writing on a tablet feels like writing on a dry erase board: fast, simple, low fidelity. The perfect tablet stylus is one that feels like a dry erase marker.

Record Monsters (Laser Cut Vinyl Record Puzzles)
recordmonsters.png
Goal$500
End Date2011-04-16
Project Creator(s)Andrew Hyde
LocationLower East Side, NY
DescriptionWe make 3d models out of old vinyl records.  We have 20 designs, from Ants to Velociraptor to Pteranodon.  We ship out a vinyl record, you get to pop out the pieces and assemble the model.

Our 'real goal' is $15k and will allow us to cut these at a much faster rate!

There are several other projects out there- these are just the ones that caught my eye!  I'll try to post these updates at least once a month, but there are new projects appearing every day, so take a look at the sites, and see what interesting things are out there!

Firefox Extension Guru's Blog

Firefox Extension Guru's Blog

Here is a pretty nifty blog that talks about firefox that I have been visiting recently.

It mentions of a extension called Status-4-Evar which I like cause I like the normal status bar myself.

Info about Status-4-Evar on Firefox Extension Guru's Blog and the link to Status-4-Evar on the addons site... Status-4-Evar

It might be of some worth to people who use firefox.

The "Cloud" Goes Up in Smoke

Yet another casualty, or casualties as the case may be:

http://www.amateurph...ost_news_306605.html

Photographers nationwide have expressed outrage after thousands of their images vanished from image-sharing website fotopic.net without warning.

Fotopic.net users have not been able to access their pictures for several weeks, sparking fears that the company behind the site has hit financial difficulties and ceased trading.

At first it seemed the problem may be technical - because the site has gone down before - but, as the weeks pass, concerns grow for the future of the site.

Question: Remind User a Flash Drive is Plugged In During Shutdown?

blog clipart
DC member acolburn asks:

More than once I have turned off my computer and walked away, only to remember later I left my flash drive plugged in. It would be great to have a small app that alerted me to the fact. It could be a message box, a sound, or something else. It could prevent the machine from shutting down until the flash drive was removed, until the user clicked an "OK" button, or it could do nothing more than remind users a thumb drive was plugged in.
