I found DonationCoder while looking for a good tool or utility to take screenshots for me and make it easy.
I read through the site and it mentioned that members of non-profits and such are able to request a permanent free key. Since I had published a novel that I give away for free, I decided to apply. They got back to me quickly and offered me a lifetime free key! He is very generous and supports others who also donate to charities, give to non-profits and the public, and serve the community...and the tools offered can be quite handy. I am very glad I found DonationCoder and I tell everyone I know about it if they are looking for good utilities or software!

Fundraiser Day 28 - The Giveaway Opens!

Day 28 of the fundraiser and it really seems like we could reach $12,000 by the time the fundraiser closes at the end of March -- that would be incredible -- and double what we were originally aiming for.

The big announcement for today is that we have posted the fundraiser giveaway entry form -- which is now open to all supporting/donating DC members.

There is an eclectic assortment of items being given away -- from the super valuable Optimus Maximum keyboard and custom programming time devoted to a project idea of your own invention, to software and unusual and rare DC memorabilia.

TabSubmit - a grea Firefox add-on

I've been a huge fan of the simple firefox plugin known as SubmitToTab; it basically lets you click on a form submit button but force the resulting web page response to open in a new tab.

Unfortunately, the SubmitToTab plugin has not been updated in a while and is not compatible with the latest FireFox 4.

While we initially posted a small patch to the addon by one of the dc members, that let it run in FireFox 4, today we got word of a brand new addon for FireFox that provides this functionality.  It's called TabSubmit, it works perfectly in FireFox 4 and is being actively maintained.  Big thumbs up!

..Unfortunately, that only results in a partially-working extension.  It works for some forms, but is broken on many others.  If you look at STT's code, you'll see that it's extremely fragile; it hooks itself into Firefox by literally re-writing built-in handler functions (see the gratuitous use of eval in the source), and that's just too fragile and buggy of an approach.

I've done a complete from-the-ground-up rewrite of STT.  Works in Firefox 3 and newer and SeaMonkey 2 and newer.  In Firefox 4 and SeaMonkey 2.1, it takes advantage of the new bootstrapping mechanisms so that it can be installed and uninstalled without restarting the browser.  Oh, and it works more reliably than the old STT.

Starcraft II: the couch-potato experience!

Screenshot - 3_28_2011 , 11_24_38 AM_thumb.png
First of all, mouser is making me post this. He is sick of me spamming Starcraft 2 games to him in IRC to sate his growing Starcraft 2 addiction. :tellme: Therefore, all blame should go to him, and all praise should go to me (and of course the wonderful people casting the games I am linking to.

What is this post about?

This post is to introduce you to the world of watching video game commentaries -- specifically commentaries on the game Starcraft 2.

worstje got me hooked on these videos -- much more interesting than actually playing the game if you ask me.

Fundraiser Day 27 - Skwire Strikes Again

Day 27 of the fundraiser and we just crossed the $11k raised mark! Woot!

For today, dc member skwire released another app: SFV Ninja, a tool for checking sfv files.

Tomorrow we should have details on the end-of-fundraiser giveaway, so get your itchy fingers ready to enter to win something good!

Robosoft from Ground Zero

DC member Renegade has begun a new website and a new series on using a PAD submission tool for programmers.  It looks interesting.  He writes:

"I'm about ready to launch a new site shortly, but along with the site launch, I'm going to be blogging about it at Cynic.me.

There are a bunch of things that I'm going to cover over the next few months.

One of the topics is going to be Robosoft. This is the first introductory post:

SFV Ninja

Name SFV Ninja (Simple File Verification application)
Short Description SFV (Simple File Verification) application.  I wrote this several years ago for my own use but cleaned up the code for a public release.

Features
  • Two verifcation modes.  The first will verify all files in the list like any typical SFV application.  The second mode will only verify any newly added files.  This second mode allows you to "update" an existing SFV file without having to verify all of the files.
  • Recursively scan a folder for SFV files and load them all at once.
  • Uses relative paths whenever possible when generating SFV files.
Supported OSes Unicode version (WinXP and up), ANSI version (Win2k and below)
