Blog Piece: Trend Watch: P2P Traffic Much Bigger Than Web Traffic

p2p_growth.jpg
Interesting blog post on readwriteweb.com, on a presentation at the Web2.0 Submmit.

While looking through Mary Meeker's 2006 Web 2.0 Summit presentation, I was struck by the figures on page 19: "Peer-to-Peer (P2P) traffic was 60% (and rising) of Internet traffic in 2004, with BitTorrent accounting for 30% of traffic, per CacheLogic". You can definitely see why this is the case, as P2P is normally used to download very large media files - music, movies, etc. But still it makes you realise just how big P2P currently is on the Internet and, given the increasing amount of video coming onto the Web, how crucial it is going forward.

I know many regulars here (including me) are looking for a good firewall solution, so this article might help:

Firewall protection fantasy doused

Free firewalls are better than their paid-for cousins. That is the surprising conclusion of a test of desktop firewalls by security researchers.

Researchers at David Matousec's matousec.com carried out tests on 21 leading products using 26 assessment programs known as "leak" testers. These simulated a total of 77 test attacks on firewalls, configured using both out-of-the-box and optimal security settings...

(snip) The researchers also hit the products with a "fake protection revealer" (FPR) designed to catch out software that had been optimised to pass some security tests without necessarily offering real-world protection...

SPinZip: Compress files into multiple .zip archives with each .zip being independent

spinzip.jpg
Sri asks:

"Anyone know a way to compress about 9000 files into multiple .zip files of 8 MB each?  The individual zip files have to be independent of each other, meaning: each of them should be extractable to get the files inside w/o the necessity of other .zip files."

Read and download Skwire's solution, SPinZip..
