Podiobooks.com - Free (Serialized) Audio Books - Donations Shared with Authors

Screenshot - 12_5_2006 , 7_44_53 AM_thumb.png
I'm not sure I really get the point of serializing these books (means you get a new chapter each week), but they are free and I really like the idea that they run on donations and share donations with authors..

Podiobooks is a term coined by Evo Terra of The Dragon Page and Slice of Scifi to describe serialized audio books which are made available in podcast format. Subscribers to the podcast feed for each book will receive a new chapter each and every week. Some listeners keep it on their computers, some transfer the book to CD, but most (hopefully) transfer the file on to their mp3 player so they can listen no matter where they are.

All the books you'll find on podiobooks.com are provided by the authors to you for free. Many authors do this to get exposure for their work, others do it in the hopes you'll buy their next work in development. Still others simply do it for the sheer joy of writing. And while it's not required, you have the option to donate money to the author of your choice. When you consider that audio books run usually 50% more than their hardcover counterparts... we hope you'll be generous. Authors receive 75% of all the proceeds from the donations from listeners. The smaller portion goes to the maintenance and upkeep of podiobooks.com.

Ask City: "The Online Map With The Best Features Hands Down?"

AskCity.jpg
CyberNetNews.com is quite excited about the new AskCity page:

I didn’t think an online mapping service could keep a clean interface like the one Google Maps has and still add more great features. Ask has done just that with their new Ask City and it is hard to even describe how smooth the site operates. In the screenshot above you can see that there is essentially three “frames”: search, results, and map. At first I was wondering “what if I don’t need the results frame” but then I realized you can maximize either the results or the map by clicking the little box in the upper-right corner of their respective frame.

musikCube 1.0 Final Released

Screenshot - 12_4_2006 , 11_43_58 PM_thumb.png
musikCube is an mp3 player for the modern generation. It helps you just listen to what you want to hear, while offering innovative features not seen elsewhere. For the technical user, musikCube is based on an embedded SQL database engine known as sqlite. For the non technical user, that means its fast. Really fast. "Dynamic playlists" allow fully automatic, randomized playback of songs based on your observed listening habits. The more you listen, the smarter it gets. It also features browsable, user reorderable playlists.

musikCube is an open source grid-centric media player that has received a lot of attention on the DonationCoder.com forums and is a fantasticly clean program designed for those who like organization above appearance.

TOP 11 Tools for Sending BIG Files

blog clipart
"You, me and I bet every webbie once in while needs to send over a file that’s bigger then max. allowed email attachment (e.g. video clip, movie, software program, etc). So 2 days ago I decided to make a list of somewhat better websites and tools for sending big files. After some extensive searching I got more then 100 sites, obviously this was too much so I filtered them further by canceling out ones which aren’t free, simple to use and with max.file size mark below 500 mb.

If you send/receive big files frequently and do so among friends then instead of using above ones I recommend to install one of the following programs, either of which is free and user friendly in its own way."

ACNP Software: Anti Cut and Past Software

Screenshot - 12_4_2006 , 12_02_58 PM_thumb.png
This product will help you determine whether others have copied sections of your code into their program. Believe it or not, people don't really tend to steal my code :)

...The modern software industry has a tradition of copying and pasting source code. This is the single most widely distributed method of producing less-than-perfect programs. Thousands of large and expensive projects contain literally millions of identical or nearly identical fragments of code costing millions of dollars per year for additional support and maintenance. Enter AntiCutAndPaste!

AntiCutAndPaste is designed to search for text fragments that have been copied and pasted in programming language source code or plain text. It is tested on sources from large C++, Visual Basic, Delphi, Java, and C# projects. AntiCutAndPaste will yield surprising results not only with publicly available sources (samples) but also with your own projects (awards). AntiCutAndPaste takes little time to download and is fast and easy to use. Don't hesitate to try it...

Note there is a free tool on their page which only compares documents you have locally (good for if you are a teacher and want to check for plaigarism amongst the submissions you have received), and a commercial tool which scours internet for duplicate content.

There are other free tools that do both - anyone remember what they are?
