I use LaunchBar Commander, Screenshot Captor, and Clipboard Help+Spell daily and frankly would find it hard to function without them.  I use the portable versions and they are a lifesaver when I am having to bounce from computer to computer.
They do what I need and excel at being reliable and useful!

Timeline Software Recommendations?

blog clipart
I'm looking for software that helps to create historical timelines.

Timeline Maker Pro -> http://www.timelinemaker.com is just the ticket, but not at the $195 pricetag.

So, I'm soliciting suggestions for alternatives.  I'd like to stay with the "single purpose"-ness of this program, in that making timelines is *all* that it does.  However, to the best of my Google-fu, there doesn't seem to a lot of offerings in that area.  So, I will also take suggestions for really good Gantt chart software etc. I have to stipulate that I am *NOT* looking for full blown project management software, so I would favour "single purpose" Gantt chart making software as well.

Additionally, I am *not* interested in web based services, unless they were something I could install on my own web serve.  And of course, OSS is preferred.  However, I'd also consider a good inexpensive alternative to Timeline Maker Pro if nothing else suitable turns up.

You folks have such wide ranging interests that my confidence is high that where I have failed, you'll succeed!

7 Day Roguelike Game Coding Challenge

roguelike.png
Rogue Temple is running their annual 7DRL (7 Day Roguelike) Challenge from March 8 to March 16, 2008.

The challenge is to announce that you will create a roguelike game and then from that point you have exactly 7 days to code a playable game.

The idea behind 7DRLs is forcing developers to finish a showable product instead of adding features endlessly to their grandiose, never to be released projects, a common pattern in the roguelike development world.

7DRL Challenges are NOT about being a /fast/ coder, but rather proving you can release a finished, playable roguelike to the world. There is no winner of the challenge, but rather all those who finish are honoured for their work, the criterion is completeness.

Roguelikes are old school rpg dungeon games, mostly text based, similar to the 1980 game called Rogue.

For those that are not familiar with what exactly a roguelike is, please refer to this wikipedia article.

For full rules and details of the challenge, please refer to their site.

Here is where most discussion of the contest seems to be, and where you should post if you want to enter:

I love everything about this challenge.. We'd love to see a DC member participate in this.  If you do - let us know and we will send you one of our rarest mugs, the Cody Game Division mug.  And please post about your progress and result and share it with the community at DC.

Minimize any window to tray on *nix

kde.png
I've seen some mention of minimize-to-tray apps here on DC, I figured I would post this for the few fellow Linux users here who might want something like this:

With AllTray you can dock any application with no native tray icon (like Evolution, Thunderbird, Terminals) into the system tray. A high-light feature is that a click on the "close" button will minimize back to system tray.  It works well with Gnome,  KDE,  XFCE 4*, Fluxbox* and WindowMaker*

I have set up a key shortcut in fluxbox, so I only have to press one button and click the window i want to send to tray. Comes in handy! Especially useful for thunderbird.

The site is now back online (March 6th, 2008)

Too exhausted to type more.. Long update will follow later.

But the real credit for the site being back up is due to long time DC member Gothic (John Sennesael) who is single-handedly responsible for migrating us to an entirely new server.  He spent the last 5 days straight working on it, and there was a lot of work involved (we basically re-did everything from scratch and moved from a cpanel system to a manual configuration, and took the opportunity to tighten everything down, clean up a lot of old junk, etc.).

Words cannot express how grateful I am to John and how lucky we all were to have him be willing to put so much work into the process.  Thank you!

We will make a long post as soon as we get some sleep, about how our site was taken down, lessons learned, lessons unlearned, man's inhumanity to man, etc.

Suffice it to say for now.. we are back!

SpellCatcher Plus Mini-review

http://www.rainmaker...cts/spellcatcherplus

Intro:

SpellCatcher Plus: Best I've seen in this category. It delivers on these features GLOBALLY in any application you work with:

- Check your spelling as you type
- Quickly access a  Dictionary and Thesaurus  so you can find just the right word when you need it...
- Helps you to type much faster by expanding shortcuts you've created into phrases.
- Performs checking on text selections that you've already typed.
- Processes text selections including counting the number of words, sentences, capitalizing sentences, removing multiple spaces, search and replace text strings, get statistics, convert case and more.
- spell Catcher is also a multi-lingual tool. It can check your words if you're working in nine different languages.
- Spell Catcher waits in the back ground until you want it, not taking up valuable screen space
