I donated a while back and have used Screenshot Captor on and off. However I have loved reading the occasional newsletter. Your newsletters are so community spirited, that I enjoy the read even there isn't a topic that I would normally be interested. I find them uplifting, and so was moved to provide a small donation, as I can't imagine the sacrifice you put in to be the glue of the donation coder community. The site is a joy to use. It's very very fast, logical and full of good information. What more could anyone ask for?Michael J.

Fx Software - Assistive Software - Freeware to aid (visually and other) impairedThis site has been mentioned on donation coder several times and was featured today on the excellent ShellCity site. Very little info there about the author of the software, but the programs are all free, and donations are requested. There are several dozen small utilities there that aid using windows in various ways for those with visual impairments and other issues. Some useful tools. http://www.fxc.btint....co.uk/assistive.htm |

Coding Snack: ALT key down visual indicator (for when alt key is stuck)i'm fighting my logitech mouse which likes annoying me by locking the ALT key down (i have alt + tab assigned to a mouse button and i suspect it doesn't release the alt key sometimes). it would be helpful if i had some kind of warning, probably a tray icon, that indicated that the ALT key was held down (i could provide the icon for this, i'm thinking that a flashing red dot would be easy to identify). i'm sure this is an autohotkey type problem so i appreciate that i could spend a few hours/days trying to figure it out - but i'm hoping one of you autohotkey masters will help out. thanks. The conflict of interest that is GoogleI post about this issue every once in a while because it seems to me to be such an obvious issue of concern, and yet doesn't seem to get much attention. Google is *the* search engine of choice for much of the world -- and there is an absolutely fevered pitch and entire industry devoted to getting results at the top of the results returned by google for any given search. While google boasts about being neutral in terms of how they rank results, increasingly, as google expands its business to every product line and industry, they are inserting their own products into their search results in order to promote their other products. Here's there latest from http://www.downloads...service-into-your-s/ : Thanks to a tip from Stuart we learned Google Health is now being integrated into health search results. For instance, if you Google search "hay fever," the top search result is Google Health. The health content is provided by A.D.A.M., an online provider of health content that is physician reviewed for consumers. Taking the number one spot for themselves, Google is making their move to be the source where consumers get their online health information and potentially dominate health search. I guess if you're Google, organic search results are whatever you want them to be. There is a huge incentive for google to rank the results it returns in order to favor products it is involved in, and pages on which it serves ads (and thus profits from sending people to websites that use their ads). This has just about reached the breaking point for me. The bottom line is that I no longer believe that google can be trusted to return results that are most likely to be what i am searching for, but rather the results and rank of information displayed are being leveraged to further their market share. |

Discussion: How can we Improve DonationCoder? In a recent discussion thread of our NANY (New Apps for the New Year) event, i was a bit harsh on someone who had some negative things to say about the general trajectory of DC lately. While I don't think that thread was the best place to talk about such things, I do think it's a discussion worth having.
So the question for this thread is, how can we improve DonationCoder? Can I just request some ground rules -- it's fine to point out problems with the site and ways it hasn't lived up to it's promises, etc., but please try to frame your comments in a way that they inform how we can make the site better. Part of the problem I think we always have is that this site is different things to different people, and the main goal of the site has to be to be as good as it can be for it's members. We aren't like a typical business whose goal is the simple maximization of "profit".. We're not looking for ideas that will make the site bigger or more popular per se. It's a bit more subtle and circular than that. In a very real sense, the question has to be, keeping in the spirit of the site, what are things we can all do to make it more useful to all of us? And what can I and others that are willing to put in the work do to make it work better for the rest of you? |
