How The Mainstream Media Stole Our News Story Without CreditYou hear so much crying from the mainstream media about bloggers stealing and republishing their content without credit, but you rarely hear about the reverse, where the mainstream media is ripping off bloggers and not giving them proper credit, not disclosing them as the source of their information. But it does happen and probably more often than we know about. Here is one such case of the mainstream media ripping off a blogger and not giving him the credit he should have had, and in many cases giving someone else the credit, instead. On Friday, I broke a tasty story about a woman suing Google, claiming bad directions caused her to get hit by a vehicle. Today, I discover our story is everywhere, often with no attribution. Come along and watch how the mainstream media, which often claims bloggers rip it off, does a little stealing of its own. http://daggle.com/ma...ws-story-credit-1906 |

FIFA World Cup Predictor 2010 - A Contest For Best Predictions?I thought it would be worth while for me to post a screenshot of a simulation of the world cup predictor and visually demonstrate the difference between the simulator picking a winner and advising a bet.
Let's look at one person's ratings data used to simulate the world cup on June 3rd, 2010, with current betting odds. After running for 30 minutes or so here are the results [READ FULL POST TO SEE SCREENSHOT].. We see that using this person's pair-wise team match up ratings, the simulator predicts that Spain has the best chance of winning the tournament (27% chance) followed by England (17%), Brazil (14%), Germany (9%), Italy (7%), Netherlands (6%), Argentina (6%); this is shown by the blue bars. However, looking at the far right column, we see the expected profit from betting on the different teams; red numbers mean a positive profit is expected (negative numbers mean predicted loss of money). Note that none of the teams with a high likelyhood of winning are good bets(!) Why? Because too many people are already betting on them and the payoffs for betting on them are so low. The simulator advises betting on Honduras and South Korea, because even though these teams have a relatively small predicted chance of winning (1% and 4% respectively), their high payoffs make the bet a smart one. REMEMBER: THIS IS THE RESULT OF ONE PERSON'S RATING FILE ESTIMATING HOW THE TEAMS MATCH UP PAIRWISE -- IF YOU USED A DIFFERENT PERSON'S RATINGS YOU WOULD GET DIFFERENT RESULTS. |

MwImporter php script - Batch import html site into MediaWiki - v2.0JavaJones and I have been working on an Open Source php script thats aid in batch converting and importing an entire directory of html files and images into a MediaWiki site. Useful if you want to convert your static page site into MediaWiki. Official Web Page and Download: https://www.donation...wimporter/index.html This builds on a number of existing tools, including HTML WikiConverter perl scripts, and the php importing tools that come with MediaWiki. What it adds is a bunch of nice helper functions that facilitate massaging the html prior to conversion, and wiki text post conversion, handling filename clashes, relative links between pages, and the handling of recursive directories of both static pages and images, using php classes that are easy to extend. We will be posting a release for anyone who might find this useful soon, though i have my doubts as to whether this isn't the empty set (let me know if not!). NOTE: I should add that really this is a generic set of php classes for "converting/importing" a recursive directory of files from one format into another, which includes derived classes specifically for converting and importing from html files into a MediaWiki site; but the base classes could serve as a useful starting point for anyone who wants php code to recursively discover and batch process/convert a directory of files from any format to any other format, with helper functions for handling commandline options, temp files, file matching patterns, etc. LICENSE: Open Source AUDIENCE: This code is intended for experienced users who aren't afraid of getting their hands dirty; if you are expecting a super friendly idiot-proof tool you need to look elsewhere (bearing in mind there is nothing else at the current time that will do this stuff). |

Screenshot Captor Screencast: Splice ToolYou'll find a screencast of the new SC "Splice" tool command here: https://www.donation...c/3ds/sc16/sc16.html The splice tool allows you to splice out horizontal or vertical regions, like banners. Good for removing ad regions in screenshots, etc. |

What to use to secure delete a HDD?Hi Codeys, i need your help. Situation: I got a new pc and want to gift my old one (still functioning) to a poor soul (friend of mine that has a much worse one than my old). I just want to pass on the hardware (without OS and Software installed) as he owns all software himself. As i also pass on my system harddisk (C:) and i FOR SURE WON'T pass on all my data, i'm in need to secure erase that HDD before giving it out of my hands. I KNOW that there are a gazillion of good and free eraser apps out there, but there is a hoop i have to jump through. Problem: As i'm to dumb to use a screwdriver, i'd prefer to avoid like hell to open the old pc, remove the hdd, stick it to my new pc as a secondary drive, erase it with a normal windows gui app, remove it from my new pc and reinstall it on my old one again. Question: Is there any free and good eraser app out there that works from e.g. Windows Console (booting from the original windows cd into console - then change CD and fire up the erase all app? I don't mind if i get any nice gui or not, it has just to erase a 160GB SATA HDD. Click here to read what free software forum members suggest.. |
