Productivity Tip - Use Zonesize from DonationCoder
There are often times when you need to have 2 or more windows displayed on the same screen where you are using both programs at once. For instance you may be viewing a browser window while writing to another document. In these situations you may also want to drag and drop text or graphics from one window to the other. Zonesize allows you to have a predefined set of window sizes or zones to suit your working pattern.

Comcast wins "Worst Company In America" Award for 2010

poopComcast.jpg
After two years as a bridesmaid in Consumerist's Worst Company In America tournament, it was finally the cable company's time to walk down the aisle when it was handed the WCIA crown this morning. And now that Comcast has tasted victory, it's not asking for seconds.

In a statement released after hearing this morning's news, a rep from Comcast says the company is taking it seriously:

“We’re working everyday to improve our customers’ experiences with us, including offering a Customer Guarantee that’s backed by significant operational changes. We’ve taken steps over the past two years to improve our product reliability and service, and if a problem does occur, we work to quickly to resolve it, find the root cause and make changes so it won’t happen again."

Quora - Facebook meets Yahoo Answers meets Wikipedia meets Twitter

Screenshot - 6_25_2010 , 8_14_18 AM_thumb.png
Simply put. Quora is just a Q&A site like Ask MetaFilter and Yahoo Answers. It's addictive and well designed user interface is what's getting people excited.

http://www.quora.com

Unfortunately, Quora sounds less interesting compared to actually using it. The initial interface is like Twitter, your later reaction will think Facebook but eventually you'll realize it's like WikiAnswers.

However because of the design of the user interface it works surprisingly clear. You'll be surprised how fast you are jumping from question to question.

Who is this app designed for:

LinkedIn users who want to better represent their expertise.

Quora basically is very reputation based and this is a major part of how it separates itself from other Q&A service.

It also has some active Silicon Valley members already that provide some very insightful answers and really there's so little unhelpful answers as of now that it doesn't feel like a public service at all.

The internet: Everything you ever need to know

Wall-E and Eve.jpg
Every so often somebody writes an article that neatly sums up a complex topic. And in doing so, he lays the groundwork for better quality discussions which (ideally) lead to even better insights down the road.

BoingBoing recently found such an article. It's written by John Naughton, who is a "professor of the public understanding of technology" at Open University. It's entitled: The internet: Everything you ever need to know.

I was going to do a write-up. But on reflection, I realized there was little I could say that hadn't already been said better - either by BoingBoing or by Prof. Naughton himself. So I'll content myself with saying: Read it!

You can read the BoingBoing article here.

You can directly jump to Naughton's article here.

Freeware World Team (great freeware site) becomes: Primewares.com

Screenshot - 6_24_2010 , 5_44_28 AM_thumb.png
I've written about Freeware World Team before.

They just underwent a name change to "Primewares" -- probably because it's shorter and easier to type.  They still focus on discovering and listing freeware, with an international focus.

Few sites are as dedicated to discovering new small freeware releases as this site.. They may not have the fanciest write-ups or the best looking layout, but the people involved are devoted to finding and listing new free software every day.  Few sites if any are as consistently good at it as they are, year after year, and they remain a daily read for me.

The Reg guide to Linux, part 1: Picking a distro (The Register)

OpenSuSE-Red.png
The Register to the rescue with a guide to picking a Linux distro:

One of the common complaints about Linux is that there are too many different editions (or “distributions”) to choose from, and only a hardcore nerd can tell them apart.... Well, it's true, but you can safely ignore 99 per cent of them. Welcome to The Register's guaranteed impartiality-free guide. Tomorrow, we'll tell you how to get them, burn them and set them up to dual-boot with Windows and on Wednesday there will be a guide to tweaking your new setup and getting it ready for use.

My fav, of course: http://www.opensuse.org
though the Register trashes it.

Graphic Design Theory Resources - web collection

girl.jpg
The folks over at Noupe.com have put together yet another excellent collection of design resources.

Noupe hasn't been mentioned on DC for a little while now, so it's probably a good idea to remind ourselves just how good a site it is from time to time.

For those of you who don't already know, Noupe is operated by Smashing Media GmbH. These are the same people that are responsible for another excellent design website: Smashing Magazine.

Graphic Design Theory: 50 Resources and Articles

As designers, we often focus on the practical aspects of design above all else. We focus on what works, with little regard for why it works. And in our day-to-day work, that outlook serves us well. It lets us get our work done in an efficient, professional manner, and generally nets good results.

But spending some time on the theory behind the graphic design principles we use every day can expand our design horizons. It can open up new avenues of creativity and experimentation that can lead our designs from just good, to fantastic. On that note, below are 50 excellent resources and articles that discuss graphic design theory, including layout, color theory, and typography. Feel free to share additional resources and articles in the comments.

Excellent set of links. If you're at all interested in design, don't miss this one.
You can read it here.
