Slashdot Question: How to Recover Stolen Laptop if you Know Thief's IP Address?

Screenshot - 7_13_2010 , 9_30_41 AM_thumb.png
Today on slashdot is a great question.  It's from someone who had a laptop stolen, and was able to catch the thief's "IP ADDRESS" (the network address which shows what internet access point they are connecting from).  But he's now in a quandary about how to get someone to track down the ip to a specific person so that the thief can be caught.  I've wondered the same thing..

I even contacted the local FBI office and they said they're 'not interested' in the case despite it now crossing state lines. Am I chasing my own tail here? How can I get someone to pay attention to the fact that all the police need to do is file some RIAA-style paperwork to find the name associated with this IP address and knock on the right door to nab a criminal and recover my property? How can I get my laptop back — and more importantly — stop this criminal in his tracks?

Slowly discover your friends (concept for a service)

f5.jpg
The first iteration of Friennuendo used the metaphor of a line and visibility. By default, both participants would start on the left side of the line and the person to be friended would be on the right side. Users can move in discrete steps across the line and if one user moves to within the visibility range of the other user, a friend request is sent. The first iteration of Friennuendo also included the idea of private areas in which only the owner could access. Private areas allow users to “hide” from unwanted friend requests by always remaining invisible.

Friennuendo is an attempt to add social nuance and avoid social awkwardness when sending a friend request to a newly made acquaintance.

DC member Tekzel writes:

So, a few months ago I stepped on the scale and it read something in the upper 280s, like 288. I think my mind blocked it out due to the trauma. I am closing in on 40 (currently 38) and it's only downhill from here.

I decided to lose weight and I started with exercise to increase my stamina. Then, after about a month and a half I started changing the way I eat. I haven't had a soda in about 3 weeks, which is unheard of. I used to drink about a 2 liter a day, though in recent years I had dropped that down to about a two liter every few days. I had myself convinced that I couldn't eat without a soda. I could drink water at other times, but when I'm eating I had to have soda. I think I have just about kicked the habit, I can even go out to dinner and order water with it now!

So, on to the point. I have lost 25 lbs so far, and I started tracking my calories a few weeks ago with an excel spreadsheet that I made. A few nights ago I stumbled across this site:

http://www.livestrong.com/myplate

Wow!  It is awesome! You can type in the foods you eat and it has a lot of stuff in the database, or you can enter the calories manually. If you eat the same meals commonly, you can set the meal up and add it with one or two clicks. You can also log your exercise.

If anyone here is trying to lose weight you might want to give this one a look.

Re: App Culture vs. Free Culture

We have been Apple's "App Store" model and it's likely migration to the windows platform, and the dangers for small developers..

http://infoworld.com...rmine-developers-559

Developers are rightly troubled by the often draconian-seeming policies at Apple's iPhone App Store. But according to analysts at Forrester Research, Apple's model represents more than just an overweening SDK license agreement. It's an entirely new relationship between software vendors and consumers, one that Forrester has dubbed "curated computing."

Listary – search all lists in Windows

A DC member writes in:

I want to share my freeware utility Listary with you. It was inspired by some nifty search boxes in Linux and Mac at the beginning, and then so many useful additional features from user feedbacks are packed into it. It's a little hard to describe what Listary can do for you in words now, so please just watch this video.
Features:
1. Add find-as-you-type search feature to all lists in Windows. File lists in Explorer and file open/save dialogs, task list in Task Manager, desktop, 7-Zip, FileZilla, jump list in Win7… every list can be searched in a flash

2. Useful commands such as "Copy path to clipboard", "Run Command Prompt in current folder" and "Toggle file extension display". Support of hot keys and 64-bit systems makes it much more convenient than shell extensions.

3. Text Editing. This feature allows you to edit text ANYWHERE with your favorite text editor. It works pretty much the same way as the famous Firefox add-on It's All Text, but Listary supports all applications including all the famous web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome.

Regards,Channing
