Things We Could Do Without: Software PatentsThat's right, you can have a patent on software. This does not mean the source code which is protected by copyright, but the idea in the code. An example is amazon's patent on their 1-click buy button. It is totally ridiculous but larger software companies do like these things as they can use their patent to keep down the competition.

iTunes 7 is a PITA ...Where do Apple get off ...
I just updated to iTunes 7.0.1 and was astonished to discover an "iTunes Outlook Addin" had appeared in Outlook !! In Outlook I removed the addin only to find the next time I started iTunes it reinstalled it !! I guess it is to sync Oultook data with an iPod but given that I don't have (or want) an iPod what is the point of an extra addin loading every time I check my emails? Not only that having deleted the unwanted icon on my desktop it placed a new icon on my desktop.. |

WhatPulse: Join a Team to Measure Mouse Distance Travelled, Clicks, Key Presses..How about a little routine that would tell you how far your mouse has travelled? I've always wondered just how far that little pointer moves in a day. Also, including the number of keystrokes would be interesting, but not as much as the mouse distance. Read about whatpulse.org, one of several programs which does exactly this.. |

Outlook Nightmares... Duplicate Email MessupRenegade posted on our forum:
I've used Outlook, and I know what it feels like to be buggered with a razor wire baseball bat... Outlook crashed on startup 100%. Got that fixed. Now I have 10's of thousands of duplicate messages. (About 40k or so.) And the duplicate remove I've used has only helped moderately. I still have about 15k messages that are unread. I keep meticulous track of my messages, and now they're all polluted. The Basic Problem: My inbox now has duplicates of emails that I've already read or responded to. I don't want to delete those. I want to delete the unread ones. And the software I used just doesn't help to fix things. |
