Blog Article: 100+ Ways to Rejuvenate the Games You Already Own

Screenshot - 10_12_2006 , 10_33_45 PM_thumb.png
In the last fifteen years, board game designers and dedicated board gamers around the world have learned a thing of two about what really makes board games fun for adults. The principles used in modern board game designs can be used to help you rejuvenate your old board games. You, too, can learn to love board games again.

It's time for you to break out the old board games. But I PROMISE you: you're not going to play them the way you remember playing them! This time, you're going to have fun with them. All it takes is a little preparation: no more than ten minutes for any game.

All you have to do is select a few new rules, and possibly write down some instructions on some index cards, for your old game to become fun again. It's like getting dozens of brand new games, better games ... for free!

Crazy Ball - Flash Game of the Day

This is a fun non-violent basketball type game you can play with two-players both sitting at the same keyboard.  Nothing spectactular but a little bit of fun for the kids.

Mike-O-Matic on GooTube and The Power of Branding

Screenshot - 10_12_2006 , 5_52_27 AM_thumb.png
Another clear smart essay by Mike Arace.  His Blog is a daily read for me.

By the way, this kind of stuff, where marketing and brand name recognition dominate decisions and success, depresses the hell out of me and makes me wonder if there isn't a better way to run a world.

Some people have asked why Google would purchase the service when they had their own well-received competitor, Google Video. Others wonder how they could justify a $1.6 billion pricetag for a website with no substantial revenue model and huge copyright violation concerns right around the corner.
The answer is simple: branding.
...
I always looked at websites based on their technical merit.
...
It doesn’t even matter if they are technically better anymore. They own the mental associations that matter, and it will take a long, long time to change that.
From a competitive standpoint, Google realized that trying to hold back the tide with Google Video wasn’t getting them what they wanted. So they wrote a check.

SpamPal Replacement?

Chris on our forum asks:
I've had spampal running on my system for about a year now.  While it works very well at detecting spam, it HOGS my system.  I have a pretty spiffy P4 3Ghz w/ 2G of RAM.  Everytime spampal is used (checking mail) my system grinds to a near halt.  Web pages time out, response is sluggish.  I've had enough...

So what's a decent spam filtering tool I can use?  I'm currently using Becky2 Internet mail and I really don't want to change.  Something that fits in as a proxy (like spampal) will work just fine.

Font Creator Mini Review

Screenshot - 10_11_2006 , 9_59_36 PM_thumb.png
Font Creator and Font Creator Pro are from High-Logic Software. They make two applications, Font Creator (for creating fonts) and MainType (for managing them).

Font Creator (both standard and pro) are designed for anyone who wants to design fonts. The standard version might be perfectly adequate for your needs and I would again refer you to the aforementioned comparison chart. I have seen other application similar in function that cost several hundred dollars more than Font Creator. All of the reviews I remember seeing on Font Creator rate it 5/5. Hence, it's one of the least expensive, very capable font development applications you can obtain.
