May we recommend..
No site does as good a job of helping you choose a freeware tool for a specific task than Gizmo's Freeware (otherwise known by us old-timers as Tech Support Alert).
The site is simply unrivaled in terms of recommendations for freeware, and if you ever find yourself asking what the best free windows utility is for a given task, it's *the* site to visit.
In each well-organized category, top alternatives are reviewed, rated, and ranked, and then discussed by all -- and reviews are frequently revisited and updated, which is a rarity.
In addition, Gizmo Richards himself has also long been a friend to freeware authors, helping to shine the light on new freeware tools, and a friend to us from the early days, helping to tell people about DonationCoder and our software -- and I am extremely honored to have had some of my tools recommended on the site.
I can't think of a better site to receive the first entry in our list of our Favorite Websites.

RobotWar and the Army of ClonesBack in 1981 Silas Warner created a game for MUSE Software which would go on to spawn an entire army of clones. Silas is probably better know as the author of the legendary Castle Wolfenstein. However it was RobotWar which went on to inspire a whole new genre. This is a game for coders, as you will be programming your robots in your choice of language, such as C, Pascal, assembly or Java. The article has a few links to various versions. http://retrocode.blo...-army-of-clones.html

Mozilla Contest: How Would You Improve Tabbed Browsing? This is actually quite interesting.. Mozilla (makers of FireFox) are having a contest to see who can come up with the best ideas for innovating the next user interface development that will go beyond the concept of "Tabs". Now personally I *love* tabs, so i'm curious to see what people come up with. For this Design Challenge we are focusing on finding creative solutions to the question: "Reinventing Tabs in the Browser - How can we create, navigate and manage multiple web sites within the same browser instance?" http://design-challe...ozilla.com/summer09/

Mozilla gives add-on developers a tip jarOk this is a good step forward. Firefox is common enough that this should make people a little more comfortable with the idea of donating to support software, which is a good thing. Mozilla has introduced a new pilot program for Firefox developers to make a little money off add-ons they've created. Developers now have the option to place a "contribution" button on their add-on page, which lets users donate any amount they wish via PayPal. http://news.cnet.com..._3-10288390-248.html |
