Newsletter for July 18th, 2011 - "DonationCoder Plus"1. Newsletter Editorial
Welcome to another edition of the DonationCoder newsletter. The title of this edition is a play on Google+ which is the hot new thing in the social networking wars. I try to stay away from these social networking things and avoid using them, but I did create an account just to see what all the fuss was about; there are a few discussion threads about it in the newsletter. Things must be a little slow on the forum lately because it's been over a month since the last newsletter and this edition only has 9 sections (compared to the normal 10-12). This might be the perfect time for those of you who are working on something interesting, or who want to start a new project, to make a post on the forum and tell the rest of us about your idea. |

Google+ Extensions thread[via John Walkenbach]
https://chrome.googl...akkaboahjmljpodddkcp Here's one called Usability Boost for Google Plus: "It's small CSS changes that put the focus on the content, separating visually posts and comments." It's a subtle change, but it definitely improves readability. |

I am so sick of google's search result urls with tracking info - with solutions: GoogleMonkeyRAnyone know of a firefox or other addon to get rid of this garbage?
When i do a google search result the results LOOK normal, but if you try to copy the link you get something like: http://www.google.co...0z7CrLfm4ffQ&cad=rja im really sick of this crap that makes it hard for me to copy and share links. there has to be a firefox plugin to put a stop to this, and honestly it's more than a little bothersome that google insists on tracking every link i click in their search results. |

BrowserID - Mozilla's solution to the password problemThe guys at the Mozilla Foundation unveiled today a clever solution to the problem that maintaining several different accounts for all the Internet services poses. The solution is called BrowserID, and it combines your e-mail address and browser to identify yourself in the Internet, effectively eliminating the need to juggle several different identities and all the passwords associated to them. This is an idea that Mozilla has been working on for a few years, but only now we're able the first results yielded by the research. http://identity.mozi...etter-way-to-sign-in While it certainly improves usability, specially for those less technically inclined, there are potential security concerns that Mozilla isn't clearing at the moment. For starters, this method would transform your e-mail account into the sole point of failure, which if compromised, could jeopardize your entire digital identity. More information, including an interactive demonstration, is available at the link above. Documentation and technical details are on a separate blog post. |

Software Mysteries (or: the rants and raves of a tech blogger)On of our favorite sites, FreewareGenius.com, has a fun piece up today with musings and observations on the world of freeware. In it he talks about some of the strange patterns he has noticed after reviewing so many programs. Some funny stuff, and also some comments that should be useful to people looking for programming ideas. Let's hope Samer writes more of these kinds of articles in the future! http://www.freewareg...s-of-a-tech-blogger/ |

"We're Alive" - Online Radio Show DramaFrom Drake's Games, one of my favorite board game review sites, comes this recommendation about a very cool and scary online indie radio show about a zombie apocalypse. You can listen to all episode online. I downloaded the first couple episodes and gave it a spin on the way to work. And then I was hooked. It turns out, We're Alive is just freaking brilliant. The story takes about two minutes before it grabs you by your nostrils and forces you to listen to every word. The characters are believable, the story is intense, and the acting is... well, OK, the acting often blows. http://drakesflames....view-were-alive.html Direct link to show: http://www.zombiepod...reAliveEpisodes.html |
