Protect Your Computer From Crazy Little Fingers
Children are attracted to computers.. Adults usually do not think that something bad can happen if their children hammer on the keyboard but they sometimes find the kill combination that does something unexpected.
Crazy Little Fingers steps in and offers a rewarding experience for the child while keeping the computer data safe. It is a fully portable application that assigns images to keys on the computer keyboard disabling all other keys that are not assigned. If a child presses a key an image is displayed, the image can be anything as it is possible to exchange the default images with others.. This could make for some interesting experiences. It would be possible to create a set of A-Z and 1-0 images that show the letter or number and something that begins with them, say an apple for A, a bee for B and so on.

Note taking software and Web Services

Screenshot - 2_14_2007 , 6_44_05 PM_thumb.png
Fantastic listing of text editing for multiple topics such as basic note taking and programming.

...I started thinking about all the services I’ve used for taking notes and thought it would be a good idea to share them with you and while I’m at it, to make a list of any others that I find. Now, when it comes to note taking, I personally look for quick and simple. If I have something on my mind, I don’t want to go through some advanced system and climb a mountain just to save a note for myself. There won’t be all the note taking tools out there on my list, but ones that I feel get the job done well...

The Importance of Fun as a Motivator for Designing Open-Source Software

Screenshot - 2_14_2007 , 6_31_54 PM_thumb.png
Here is an article from an online, peer-reviewed journal that discusses motivating factors in open-source software.

The goal of the study on Fun and Software Development (FASD) is to precisely assess the importance that fun has as motivation for software developers to engage in open source projects. A survey carried out both under open source developers and programmers working in Swiss software companies yielded that the fun motive accounts for about 27 percent to 33 percent of open source developers’ motivation.
Fun is a pervasive feature of software development, not only for open source programmers but in the area of commercial software development too: Open source developers that are paid for their work are observed to be very motivated and prepared for future effort, especially if they enjoy their development time. Furthermore, the fun that programmers experience functions as a good proxy for their productivity. Therefore, employers that want to enhance the programmers’ productivity can safely invest in an environment of fun for developers in their company.

Here's a page of interesting "mind-mapping" software. Hmm, I wonder where my DC nucleus is :P

Screenshot - 2_12_2007 , 7_27_32 PM_thumb.png
Here's a free, cool program for working with audio clips, particularly if you want to "mangle" them.

Wavosaur is a powerful free audio editor for Windows XP, ideal for editing audio clips, sound designing, mastering, audio mangling and recording of your digital audio sounds.
Wavosaur lets you edit all your samples and audio recording. You can cut, copy, paste parts of your digital recording. Wavosaur provides many tools and shortcuts to make the editing very fast and efficient. The program was designed to give a powerful audio editor but very easy and fast to use.
Wavosaur is also a VST host, it means you can use VST effects on your audio recording, listen in real time to the audio processed by effects, and apply the effects of course.

Geogebra - (free software) - Calling all maths teachers

Screenshot - 2_12_2007 , 12_58_58 PM_thumb.png
Here's free software for maths teachers and students which is really top stuff.

What is GeoGebra?
GeoGebra is a dynamic mathematics software for education in secondary schools that joins geometry, algebra and calculus.
On the one hand, GeoGebra is a dynamic geometry system. You can do constructions with points, vectors, segments, lines, conic sections as well as functions and change them dynamically afterwards.

On the other hand, equations and coordinates can be entered directly. Thus, GeoGebra has the ability to deal with variables for numbers, vectors and points, finds derivatives and integrals of functions and offers commands like Root or Extremum.

These two views are characteristic of GeoGebra: an expression in the algebra window corresponds to an object in the geometry window and vice versa."

So what does it actually do? It lets you construct elements listed in the quote which can be manipulated by the student. Not only can you manipulate the "geometry", but you can also see values of variables changing. Your construction can be exported to an applet embedded in a web page.

Rather than posting a screenshot, if you're in theis field, have a look at:
