Found Freeware: CPU monitor that plays sound according to activity - TaskMonifier

blog clipart
I have a couple of long tasks I kick off and walk away from -- one is a compiler that takes about 7 minutes to complete and pegs the CPU at 100% (50% on a dual core) the while.  It would be great to be able to HEAR how the thing is doing while I'm in another part of the room.  Thus...

- Need a small utility that sits in the tray and monitors cpu activity
- Should handle multiple cores/cpu's and report on the TOTAL cpu usage
- Should play a small "blip" or hum or something that rises in tone/frequency for every percentage increment
- Should be entirely silent if average activity falls below a threshold (10%?)
- XP compatibility only; Vista not needed.  In fact, screw Vista.  Vista sucks.

Nice to have:

- Customizable sound (maybe select a .wav file?)
- Ability to select wanted/ignore unwanted processes by .exe name
- Upon falloff to 0% (or below threshold) for x seconds, play a "completed" sound.

Whatcha think?

Versioning of files?

blog clipart
...I have glanced (thats all..) at tortoise svn etc - they do seem to be aimed at developers but may be suitable ?

Or then there's Filehamster (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=7492.0) which saves versions but
1) I'm not sure how accessible these versions are outside Filehamster
2) not sure how accessible the comments are
3) I save files sometimes very often - I have a horror of having to redo stuff :) -
I dont want a new version for each save & think that''s what Filehamster does

.. as I say humbly looking for a bit of direction/help, not afraid to go in the deep end, but naturally the easier the better.

Jeff Atwood revists the issue of best programming fonts..

Screenshot - 10_4_2007 , 6_34_48 PM.png
From http://www.codinghor...000969.html#comments:

I've experimented with programming fonts and IDE color schemes plenty in the past. But now that I've given in to the inevitability of ClearType on large LCDs, I've basically settled on Consolas. It's hard to beat Consolas. It's darn close to the ultimate monospace programming font in my estimation. That's why I was so intrigued when I read about Inconsolata, a non-denominational OpenType relative of Consolas, which unlike Consolas, works equally well with ClearType enabled or disabled.

Once I tried out Inconsolata, I figured I might as well revisit all the common, popular programming fonts under the same conditions. So here goes.

Jeff's bottom line conclusion about scalable fonts with aliasing:
Personally, I still don't think anything beats Consolas; it's an outstanding monospace typeface design, highly optimized for ClearType display on LCDs.

Do not miss this comment Jeff added in the comments thread:

Of all the per-pixel, fixed size bitmap fonts, I think Dina is the best.

Wanted:  Simple drum machine program!

blog clipart
I have been looking forever, I am learning to play the guitar and need to work on my timing.  I despise metronomes and want something more interesting, something that can just loop a drum beat.  Sounds simple right?  Surely there has to be a bunch of programs out there that do this, right?  No.  Everything I find is this huge convoluted mess of a program where you have to design the beats and stuff.  I just want something with some drum beats that I can select and hit play and it goes and goes, so I can practice along with it.  Anyone seen or heard of anything like that?

Basically this site has created a ton of different linux distributions, pre-installed into http://vmware player packages.   So if you are interested in trying out different versions linux, this can be the easiest and safest way.

This site is dedicated to virtual appliances that we build for you to use FREE of charge. The virtual appliances are generally normal installs of the distro with some changes/updates and customizations by us. This means that you can go to the home-site for each distro to find information and the package list.
