Sharing the Software Discounts
I liked the idea of your site so, if I  can save some money with the code for BBFlashback the least I can do is plough a bit of it back..

Coding Snack: Find filenames/folders above certain length and offer to rename them?

blog clipart
As per title, i was thinking that a program could go through given folders recursively and report back the files/folders that are above the user-defined length and alow the user to rename them within the UI.

this will come in handy when burning cd backups. too many times, the burner complains about extra-long filenames way too late and sometimes this happens during the burning session, with a prompt holding up everything. i'm not someone who hangs around watching the whole burning session, so this program will be a good guide for me before i click the 'Burn' button.

Frustration with User Feedback

blog clipart
says dc forum member wraith808:

"Frustration with User Feedback ... or lack thereof.

I've posted quite a few apps- all free- and have gotten very little feedback, especially on the more complicated ones.  I wrote a portable application wrapper most recently, and have *tons* of downloads (it's a good thing it's small and I don't have a lot of traffic to my sites since it spiked my bandwidth), but have had *zero* feedback.

I do a lot of testing to my apps, and am somewhat of a perfectionist, especially since I do this to try out new techniques to keep myself on the edge professionally, so I know they're of good quality, but they aren't *perfect*, and getting no complaints about *anything* is very disheartening and frustrating.

I've thought of making them postcardware or commentware or donationware and putting nags in just to get *some* sort of feedback, but I'm not in this for the money or anything like that, or to force people to say anything.  It would just be nice if they did.

What are others' thoughts/experiences on this?"

Steam online game account system flirts with micropayments

Screenshot - 3_18_2009 , 5_51_53 AM_thumb.png
I like to stay on top of developments in the micropayment world since DC is a member of this small community.  I'm skeptical about the details of this specific system on Steam actually resulting in a micropayment system that people use.

However, I think you can see how micropayments are going to eventually catch on -- and that's when people are, as a side effect of some other motivation, already part of a large network of users whose financial information is already in place so that they can pay without risk or inconvenience.

As I wrote about here, the term "micropayment" is probably going to turn out to be a misnomer.  The key issue for developers who wish to survive on trivial end-user payments is not the size of these payments but the ease in which they need to be doable before they will become financially viable to a producer.  For this to happen, we need a kind of financial account facebook/myspace/twitter thing, where most of the planet is signed up.  I don't know how long it will take to get to that point but I think it's coming.

Valve's Steam software has a new feature for game publishers that lets them sell additional downloadable content, or DLC, from within their games.   Valve says the new system will allow users to purchase and add additional content, even on titles that were not purchased through Steam's game store, just like it does with physical software titles that were purchased from other retailers.

AudioBookSleep

audiobooksleep.png
AudioBookSleep v090227
http://nod5.dcmember.../audiobooksleep.html

overview:
AudioBookSleep waits X minutes, saves a screenshot of VLC to desktop, then shuts down the computer.
The VLC screenshot shows the filename and time just before shutdown.
That makes it easier to next time continue from where you dozed off.

use case:
You listen to audiobooks at night but often fall asleep. You then awake hours later (at 3:23 AM) from the laptop light and audiobook sound. You dislike having to go up and turn it off manually. And now you're unsure at what point in the book you fell asleep. Even worse, when you woke up you heard some part from later chapters that gives away the plot! You wish for some automatic screenshot-then-shutdown timer. So you start to use AudioBookSleep.

Re: MARCH 2009: It's the 4th Anniversary DonationCoder.com Fundraiser

Thank you to everyone who helped us reach our $8,000 goal for the fundraiser.  It has been so wonderful watching the donations come in and watching Cody's temperature rise.

For those of you that expected the thermometer to explode when we reached $8,000 -- I apologize for the cruel trick of it expanding to $12,000.  But just think of the people who haven't yet donated.. You don't want them to feel left out do you?  They should still have a chance to participate.

Thank you everyone for making the fundraiser a success!
