FreewareMission.com: 94 Great Freeware Programs For A Freeware Only PC

Screenshot - 6_8_2009 , 4_30_24 PM_thumb.png
Nice list here, with mini-reviews of all his choices.  Seems we've been remiss in not mentioning the FreewareMission website in the past..

Hello folks! As I promised I’m going to release the first Freeware Mission MegaPack for 2009 as it’s been almost six months since the last MegaPack was released, with 72 freeware programs back in December 2008. The new MegaPack has 94 freeware programs, all tested and installed in my freeware only PC. For those of you who don’t know what the Freeware Mission is all about I’m going to explain how and why in a few words.

I have a Windows XP powered PC, it came with the operating system installed when I bought it and I guess this is the case for many of you. Last year I reinstalled Windows XP and I thought about making my PC freeware only, doing my daily PC jobs only with freeware programs and getting rid of all that expensive and buggy paid software. These 94 freeware programs below are the ones that I am using now on a daily basis.

Tech News Weekly: Edition 23-09

Hi all. As you have likely already noticed, I am a day late yet again. My apologies. My godmother is in town for the first time since I was too young to remember her visit and it's been quite a blast. As the Aussies will know, it is also the Queen's Birthday long weekend, thus I've been busy having fun for the past 3 days..

PHP Speedy - great way to speed up your website (also wordpress plug-in)

yslow.png
Okay this is an amazing bit of code - If you have a website that's php based then you'll definately benefit from this. What it does is combining CSS files into 1 file, combining all javascript into 1 file, setting expiry headers, caching options and gzip options on the site so that there's less overhead, smaller filesizes and improved loading times. There are options for all these things.

PHP Speedy is a script that you can install on your web server to automatically speed up the download time of your web pages. PHP Speedy automatically joins together all the appropriate files and compressed them, greatly reducing the load time of the page.

Switch Filenames

blog clipart
Let's say, i've got 2 files: filea.jpg and fileb.jpg

But I want filea.jpg to be fileb.jpg and fileb.jpg to be filea.jpg. Normally the filenames I want to switch are longer, so it takes longer to switch them, because I have to copy/paste twice and stuff. I want a simple tool where I can drop 2 items and they will switch filenames.

StrongWebmail apparently hacked after issuing $10K challenge

Screenshot - 6_5_2009 , 8_07_13 AM_thumb.png
It will be very interesting to hear the details about this as they are revealed..

After putting forth a $10,000 come-and-get-us challenge, it's possible that StrongWebmail CEO Darren Berkovitz is rethinking his stance on that. The company, which makes voice-based authentication software, dared hackers to break into Mr. Berkovitz's Web-mail account and report back details from an upcoming date on his calendar. A week later, a team of high-profile security researchers contacted a reporter with precisely that information.
