Here's one of those very cool one-man development sites filled with useful utilities.  This one is called "the sz".
Some really cool looking network tools and other utilities, and the author seems open to feature requests.  Clearly a very skilled coder.

A quick list of utility names to give you a flavor of the site:
Doro::Free PDF Printer , Last.FM Downloader , York::Network Traffic Trace , Hotmail Email Notifier , Flash Builder/Flash Player , Homedale::WLAN Monitor , PortScan , Yale::Network Usage , Nassau::Network Info , Royal::RSS Reader , SpyEx , Parkdale::SpeedTest  , Carroll::Resolution Per User , VisualCVS , mod_auth_msfix , Bear::GDI Usage , RequestTrace , NetChat , Quartz , Rimhill , CDInfo , CheckSum , PE Header Patcher , SZ_OS

LockHunter: Fix file-in-use problems on Windows x64 (free donationware)

cabinet Screenshot - 8_21_2009 , 10_40_00 AM_thumb.png
From the Raymond.cc blog today:

Without a doubt that The Unlocker is the best and its one of my must-install software after I’ve finished installing Windows. If you don’t know what is Unlocker for, it is a utility used to determine what file a process is using if a user tried to delete it, and displays a list of processes as well as choices on what to do with the process (kill task, unlock, etc.) along with a list of file function options (delete, rename, move).
...
However, until today there’s no update to support 64 bit of Windows XP/Vista/7. If you’ve been searching high and low for an alternative, look no further because LockHunter does the same thing as Unlocker and it supports both 32 and 64 bit of Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista and 7. Most importantly it is free and very light in system resource usage.

Wired Science: Best Science Visualization Videos of 2009

cabinet Screenshot - 8_21_2009 , 9_01_13 AM_thumb.png
All of these videos seem to be modeling of physical phenomena so this list seems a bit biased -- but they are cool.

Some of the most impressive images in science are produced when researchers take numerical data and represent it visually through modeling and computer graphics. The Department of Energy honored 10 of this year’s best scientific visualizations with its annual SciDAC Vis Night awards, at the Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing conference (SciDAC) in June. Researchers submitted visualizations to the contest, and program participants voted on the best of the best. From earthquakes to jet flames, this gallery of videos and images show how beautiful (and descriptive) visual data can be.

Newsletter for August 20th, 2009 - Codename "Screencast Summer"

1. Newsletter Editorial

It's the dog days of summer here in the US Midwest, and it's time for another DC newsletter.  In the last newsletter I announced that I would finally be recording and posting some screencasts showing how to use various features of my larger applications.  I started with a series of about 15 videos demonstrating different features of my Screenshot Captor program, and am now about 20% of the way through a series of about 50 videos on my Find and Run Robot program (yikes!).

So if you've ever wondered what these programs are about, now's the time to stop by the DonationCoder.com blog and have a look -- each video is only a few minutes long and none of them are as painful to watch as the movie Transformers 2.  And I'm happy to announce here that I will am extending the summer of screencasts for another month, and will be posting a new screencast every day all the way through September.  And I reiterate my plea that other coders on the forum take the opportunity to post some videos of their own software.

Next up, some more donationcoder gatherings to tell you about. Let's be honest, these aren't exactly assembly hall conventions, and it's usually just one or two people getting together.  But anyone within driving distance of my house on August 29th is welcome to stop by to have some dinner and play board games -- the dc server admin (john) and his wife (traci) are moving to my neighborhood and are staying with me for a bit and so I figured the more the merrier.  And in germany there will be another gathering at the famous c-base geek club (i wish we had one of those here).  Check the threads below for details and to rsvp.

Lastly.. Baby Cody, the stuffed animal version of the DonationCoder site mascot, has begun his travels around the world visiting donationcoder forum members; you can check out some pictures of him in England in the links below.

Oh, and if you have some web design and user interface skills, please do see the link in section 2 below -- one of your fellow dc members wrote a very fun experimental interactive fiction text "game" and he really needs some help polishing up the user interface.
