Lots of clever free utilitiesThe Donation Coder site is offering hundreds of free utilities all full-featured with no nag screens. They use a novel licensing system: you have to register to get a free license key which allows you to download any number of programs on the site. This key lasts six months after which you must return to the site to download another free license key. After a year you are given a permanent license. Alternatively, you can make a once-up donation of any size and get a permanent key straight away. It's a clever and ethical way to encourage users to recognize the work done by freeware authors and I support it fully. The quality of the utility programs offered is very high and a number are unique in what they do. Highly recommended.

Why I stand up for StallmanNice pieces by Jack Schofield and another by Dave Winer that get attention earlier this week: "Stallman set out to write a free clone of Unix, single-handed, in 1983, and wrote the free Emacs editor, GNU C compiler and debugger and other programs -- a prodigious feat. He also founded the Free Software Foundation, and developed the GPL (GNU Public Licence) under which a great deal of free and open source software is released. GNU and the GPL have been hugely influential, and in this context, complaining about the fact that (say) Stallman likes parrots is ridiculously small-minded and conformist. Harmless eccentricities should be celebrated, not disallowed." ________________________________________ Leave Richard Stallman alone by Jack Schofield http://www.zdnet.co....lman-alone-10024721/ Why I stand up for Stallman by Dave Winer http://scripting.com...ndUpForStallman.html |

The Inside Story on How Microsof't Tablet Didn't Happen?Interesting article over on CNet (I'm still mad at them BTW!) about why there is no Microsoft tablet today. In Tracy Kidder's book Soul of a New Machine there's a discussion about all the things that need to come together before a new computer actually makes it "out the door." Many of them have to do with internal politics; integration into existing product lines; and not cannibalizing other your other businesses. Few have to do with pursuing technical excellence, embracing innovation, or providing radically better products. The following account (if in fact true) is a classic example of why the better mousetrap catches fewer mice. (Answer = because it didn't get built.) Link to full article here. NaGa DeMonWell, I was going to try my hand (and possibly fail) again to participate in NaNoWriMo. But I'm not any more. I found a more suited pursuit for the month of November. NaGa DeMon! (or National Game Design Month) Short Excerpt from the link above: National Game Design Month is about making and playing games. In 2011 during the month of November I want You to create and play your own boardgame, RPG, flash computer game, choose-your-own-adventure book, wargame, cardgame or other destracting novelty. The rules are simple – create, write and play (at least once) a game during the month. I have many games that are the spark of an idea, but not completed- this will hopefully give me the impetus to complete at least one. And I'll get some writing in with the sidebar blurbs. So off I go! I'll put a site up for it when I get into the groove, but I'm excited! |

Products designed to fail, a documentaryIn case you need yet another thing to piss you off in this world, Here's an interesting documentary I found that confirms what I always suspected: how nowadays products are designed to fail from the start... http://documentaryhe...ightbulb-conspiracy/ |
