LOLMouser - Fun Razorz Begin.png
The fundraiser has officially begun!  The thermometer is up and has a goal of $3,000.

Please help cheer it on and nudge it forward by making a donation now.

This year marks the 7th anniversary of DonationCoder.com.

We've been deeply honored to be a part of a great experiment in alternative funding for software development -- one that many people thought would never succeed. This site, and the community that has grown up around it, has thrived over the last 7 years, producing a constant stream of new applications and resources for the software connoisseur in all of us.

THANK YOU

If you've made a donation to our site recently -- Thank You. Your financial support has made this site possible. But... If you haven't donated to the site recently - can we convince you to make a new donation during our fundraiser?

WHY DONATE?

By supporting this site you make it possible for us to keep DonationCoder.com unbiased, free of advertisements, and focused like a laser on providing useful original content. Your donations make it possible for us to spend the time developing and improving our downloadable software, pay for the heavy duty web servers that keep this site running, and let us provide hosting space for new coders.

Screenshot Captor v3 Review at PC World

blog clipart
PC World has a really nice review of Screenshot Captor this week, especially loving on the new Scrolling Capture features:

If you don't mind the initial learning curve, you'll find Screenshot Captor 3 to be a very capable screenshot application that makes things as simple while still providing enough tools to obtain professional-looking results... The end result was a beautiful screenshot of a page containing an animated GIF. Screenshot Captor 2, Snagit 0.

DC Member Skwire continues to his path to world domination with another application release!

TitlesCheckbook
DescriptionSimple checkbook or bank account register.  I wrote this as a simple way for my daughters to keep track of their money.  As such, there are no fancy features like reporting, etc., nor will there be.  The application, however, does offer export to CSV and HTML formats.  I feel there are plenty of other full-featured account tracking applications out there and I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

Security hole reported in RDP: Update Windows Now

blog clipart
http://www.zdnet.com...dows-worm-hole/10745

Attention Microsoft Windows administrators: Stop what you’re doing and apply the new — and very critical — MS12-020 update.

Microsoft is warning that there’s a remote, pre-authentication, network-accessible code execution vulnerability in its implementation of the RDP protocol.

From the bulletin:

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that the Remote Desktop Protocol accesses an object in memory that has been improperly initialized or has been deleted. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run abitrary code on the target system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

Why 24-bit/192kHz music files make no sense - and may be bad for you!

cochlea-and-responses.png
It's been a while since I've been over to the xiph.org website. But a heads-up on the Hacker News RSS feed directed me to this:

http://people.xiph.o...demo/neil-young.html

An excellent article by Redhat's 'Monty' Montgomery entitled: 24/192 Music Downloads...and why they make no sense

Articles last month revealed that musician Neil Young and Apple's Steve Jobs discussed offering digital music downloads of 'uncompromised studio quality'. Much of the press and user commentary was particularly enthusiastic about the prospect of uncompressed 24 bit 192kHz downloads. 24/192 featured prominently in my own conversations with Mr. Young's group several months ago.

Unfortunately, there is no point to distributing music in 24-bit/192kHz format. Its playback fidelity is slightly inferior to 16/44.1 or 16/48, and it takes up 6 times the space.

There are a few real problems with the audio quality and 'experience' of digitally distributed music today. 24/192 solves none of them. While everyone fixates on 24/192 as a magic bullet, we're not going to see any actual improvement.
First, the bad news

In the past few weeks, I've had conversations with intelligent, scientifically minded individuals who believe in 24/192 downloads and want to know how anyone could possibly disagree. They asked good questions that deserve detailed answers.

I was also interested in what motivated high-rate digital audio advocacy. Responses indicate that few people understand basic signal theory or the sampling theorem, which is hardly surprising. Misunderstandings of the mathematics, technology, and physiology arose in most of the conversations, often asserted by professionals who otherwise possessed significant audio expertise. Some even argued that the sampling theorem doesn't really explain how digital audio actually works [1].

Misinformation and superstition only serve charlatans. So, let's cover some of the basics of why 24/192 distribution makes no sense before suggesting some improvements that actually do.

FreewareGenius.com: The Best Free Compression / ZIP program

Screenshot - 3_5_2012 , 5_28_18 AM_thumb.png
Big long piece on freewaregenius.com today, comparing free zip/compression tools.  Quite an impressive amount of work they did comparing the performance of the tools.

We set out to test what we thought to be the best free compression programs in a head-to-head QUANTITATIVE comparison, where we collected actual compression and extraction data on different system. We also took other, qualitative aspects into consideration, such as the features, the appeal of the interface, etc.

One of two tied for first place should be no surprise, it's the well known and powerful "7-zip"; the surprise is the other top place contender, "HaoZip", which is new to me.
