Process Tamer Opinions on SnapFiles
Bit of a fraggle having to renew freeware license every six months (or make a financial donation) but well worth the effort.. The configuration menu / interface may prove a bit daunting to anyone not computer literate but the program chugs along quite happily in its 'as supplied' mode - so no real worries there. Do I like it? Yes, very much and have no hesitation in highly recommending it... Well I must admit I was sceptically about this one. Heh! it works like a charm... Wow. This is a nice little utility. It works as advertised. Very, very handy; this is what freeware is all about. In addition it is very stable. One of the problems with freeware is that they can be unstable and rough around the edges--this program is neither... This is just the little program I have been searching for. It does exactly what it was developed to do.. A must have for anyone who wants to speed up their system at crucial times.

Ok, the "2006 Best Of Year-End Wrap" is now online!

It took so long to put this up that I'm sure I missed tons of sites and included tons of stuff that surely is less deserving.  So consider this a work in progress and please do submit suggestions to me for stuff I should add and stuff I should remove.  It's fine to suggest your own sites, but please do give me a link to a thread on the forum as everything comes from there (make a new post if you have to).

You can post suggestions here or email them to [email protected], or submit them through the suggestion form on the Best Of start page.

Good Freeware Video Editor?

siouxdax asks:
Anyone know of a good freeware video editor. I have ArcSoft Showbiz pre-installed on my PC, but I don't like it very much. I'd rather support open source. All I really want is to be able to do some basic editing, fades, add sound/music, titles, etc. Also want it to support a variety of formats.

Hacknot: Contract vs. Regular Employment

Screenshot - 1_1_2007 , 4_54_02 PM_thumb.png
Here's an interesting discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of contact work versus "permanent" (regular) employment.

There are two dominant modes of employment for software developers - permanent and contract. The woefully misnamed "permanent" staff member has a conventional employer/employee arrangement with a company, receives paid sick leave and annual leave, and is afforded a certain amount of legal protection regarding rights and conditions. A contractor is not an employee of the company in the usual sense, but a hired gun who is contractually engaged by the company to provide services for a fixed period of time. Contract periods are typically in multiples of three months.

A decision all developers must make when entering the job market is whether they are seeking a contract or permanent role...

Looking for a freeware .mov to .mpeg4 converter

App on our forum asks:

My daughter's new camera takes video but the files are .mov.

She is in need of a very easy to use freeware converter that will convert the files to MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) for uploading to youtube. (not for burning to dvd)

She isn't very patient or knowledgeable with computers so it would have to be something very easy to use. (think of what you would suggest to the average grandma that hasn't used a pc for anything except email, IM, and web surfing)

Master of Defense - Another Great Tower Defense Game

Screenshot - 12_31_2006 , 5_43_13 PM_thumb.png
As someone who always felt overwhelmed by the complicated strategy games, I really have fallen in love with these tower defense games recently.  To me they are the perfect example of games you can jump right into and have fun, and only worry about deeper strategy later as you want.

Plus for me a huge plus is the pure enjoyment of watching the emergent interactions of the creatures and defenses.  It's the perfect combination of a toy and a game.

I still think the free Curator Defense is my favorite just because of its pure simplicity.  But if you are looking for a richer deeper experience, here's a shareware game which has some nice graphics and a much longer gameplay with much more variety:

Master Of Defense is a wonderful strategy game that lets you assume the role of a brave hero, who has been chosen to save the ancient kingdom from the hordes of monsters. The challenge of the game is to ward off relentless attacks of monsters and prevent them from capturing people in your castle.  You do this by building towers on the way of the hordes and casting spells. Defeating monsters yields rewards.   You get rewarded for every killed monster and gain a bonus at the end of each attack. To improve your winning chances, you must invest into building new towers and upgrading the old ones in order to increase their firepower, fire speed and range.
