I dont have a printer and I find this very useful, without this program I'm not sure what I would do.
To the makers thanks so much for your hard work on this great software.

Console: a great CMD.exe replacement application?

console2-02.jpg
I tested this one out a few months ago and it was MAJORLY buggy.

I don't know if it has improved much since September. Just be warned.

I was planning on doing a review on this one at some point and this is from my notes I made for the review. All of these issues could be fixed in the current version, I don't know.

At that time, this was my observations:

  • There was no help file. Nothing to explain what any feature or setting was and how to use it. You were on your own and were meant to guess. Since this is a beta, that can be subject to change, and a help file may be included in a future release, or this one. At least I hope so.
  • It needed more work on the GUI. There was still some bugs in it. Text would sometimes not show unless you resized the window slightly.
  • Transparency was weird...not really transparent at all. It used the desktop as the background which can be kind of weird if there is another window under it. That will not show at all.
  • Renaming tabs wasn't quite ready...it reverted back to original name.

To be fair, I'll post the good stuff too:
  • Having tabs is a great idea...less clutter on your desktop, more organization.
  • The idea that you can set it to 'pinned to desktop' is nice, too. That allows you to let the console window have focus while another window is on top of it. Handy for referring to data while you type into the console window.
  • You can also highlight text like you would in any normal sort of Windows program by just dragging your mouse over it...no need to right click and select 'mark' first. Also if you set the hotkeys, Ctrl+C can be used to copy, just like in Windows. (anybody that has tried that hotkey combo in a normal console window knows it won't copy text there
  • Hotkeys - You can assign hotkey combinations to various tasks such as copy, paste, new tab, rename tab, next & previous tab, switching to specific tabs, and close tab.
  • Colors - You can decide what colors you feel like looking at. Not limited to the standard white text on a black background.
  • Font options - You can select the font, size, and style most comfortable for you.
  • Docking - pick any one of the 4 corners, or none at all.
  • Z-order - You can choose from always on top, always on bottom, pinned to desktop, or regular.
  • Transparency -  You don't have to have it solid, like in a traditional console window.
  • Tray Icon - the full menu is available from an optional tray icon.

Combining settings, it is possible to get the illusion of typing directly onto your desktop, or the output of a console application right on your desktop.

Password-protect external HD (USB)?

blog clipart
As some of you noticed in https://www.donation...index.php?topic=7068, I'm currently looking for an external HD.

Is there a way to password-protect the content? Like that I would need to enter a password before Windows is able to really access the drive after I reconnect it?

It doesn't have to be CIA-proof (although that's never bad ;D), I'm just considering putting a backup HD in the hands (or drawer) of a friend or neighbor (in case my flat burns down to the ground) and don't want him to read all of my files.

JAlbum v7 Released - One of the Best Web Photo Album Creators (free)

Screenshot - 2_1_2007 , 6_04_23 AM_thumb.png
JAlbum is one of the very best web photo album creator programs.  Version 7 was just released (history) and has some major improvements to the user interface, which is packed with options.

I've used JAlbum in the past and it's a great program with tons of different web skins that effect how your photo album looks and behaves.

Some people prefer server-based photo album software, for which there are also some good free scripts (Gallery is the big kid on the block here).  But many people prefer to have the pages generated on their local pc and then uploaded.  JAlbum is like that.  All pages are generated statically for you and you just upload the results (or let the program upload them for you).

ps. It's called JAlbum because it's written in Java - works on windows/mac/*nix.

Sorting Contest

I remember this earlier post by KenR about comparing sorting algorithms. I found another site that does the same.

Check out this Sorting Contest. Nice thing is you can click one button to start all sorting routines similtaneously.

evoca - empower your voice

evoca is a free service that lets you create and share your voice/audio. You can directly hit the record button on their site, start speaking in your mic and once done, hit the stop button. Now you can embed this audio in your site/blog or e-mail it to others. You can also upload an existing mp3 from your computer or dial a phone number (not sure if it's toll-free or not) and leave your message.

http://www.evoca.com/

Recording time for a free account is limited to 60 minutes.

Here's a small audio I created: http://www.evoca.com...ording.jsp?rid=40170

Have a microphone? Why not leave a short hello to DonationCoder?  8) Record your voice and leave the links here.

QuickSoundSwitch

qSettings.gif
introducing QuickSoundSwitch... a nice freeware with command-line support, no need to install..

QuickSoundSwitch is a small System Tray tool, which allows you to switch the default sound device with only one click.
It is useful for PCs with more than one soundcard (or for example soundcard + usb headset..)! A lot of windows programs like games, media players etc. are using the default windows sound device.
So, since I got two soundcards in my computer, I really got pissed about changeing the output device in the Control Panel all the time.

I was searching the web, but could not find a program to get rid of this..
