2XL Simulator - A Public Service?
Thank you for the 2XL simulator. This is a toy that I begged my mother to buy me sometime in the 70s. I am enjoying your program immensely. I consider it to be a valuable public service!!

FARR 2 Public Release postponed from July to August

After a feverish month of work on FARR v2, i've decided to push back the official public release another month.

The currently available alpha version is still available to anyone who wants it and is very stable.

I've decided to postpone the official release because I want it to be as smooth an experience as i can make it when it is finally given out to the public, and we aren't quite there yet.  Plus I still have some minor work to do in making the DcUpdater tool as friendly as I can.

So, if you want to start using version 2 don't hesitate to message me on the forum or email me ([email protected]) and i will happily provide you the download link.

Thank you for your understanding,

IDEA: Create a containing folder by right clicking on a file

blog clipart
Hi folks,

In my newsletter, I have a section called "What do you want?". Often I can find an existing program that fits the need, and more often others chime in with plenty of ideas.

Here is a request that I figured would be perfect as a coding snack and additionally would make my readers familiar with your services in this forum.

Marlene O wrote the following:

I would really like a little progie that would make a new folder for a file. For instance if I have a zip file called reader.zip, if I could right click it and have the option to make a folder called reader that I could put it in. I get so sick of right clicking and choosing new then folder then typing in reader. Sounds trivial but it is so annoying when you have fifty files that you want to make a separate folder for each file..

In this case, I don't believe she is asking to have the program unzip the file into a folder. That is already available to most folks.

I believe she merely wants a folder to store it in. Perhaps the program could also move the file into the containing folder. Another idea might allow selecting more than one file and using those names to create an equal number of folders to contain the files.

Thanks to all, Clif

Black Hat security presenter turned away at US border

German security expert denied entry to the US for carrying training materials on analyzing software for security vulnerabilities

Thomas Dullien, who's also known by the nickname Halvar Flake, was denied entry into the U.S. because he was contracted to speak at Black Hat as a private individual and not as a representative of his company, according to a post on his blog. He was refused entry after customs officials found training materials he had packed in his luggage, it said.

Dullien, the CEO and head of research at Sabre Labs, was scheduled to conduct a two-day training course at Black Hat on analyzing software for security vulnerabilities. The session, set to start on Monday and limited to 18 attendees, was sold out.

How not to do business on the internet

SNAG-0005.png
The irony in this story is so thick I may need a spatula to complete it.

Here's a lesson in how not to do business on the Internet:

a) Start a company that guarantees your customers never have to worry about having their identity stolen;

b) Publish your own Social Security Number on your company's Web site, to show just how foolproof your service is;

c) Allow a mentally retarded person to steal your identity, using the SSN you've just broadcast to the world;

d) Send thugs to his home to wring a confession from him, making the crime impossible to prosecute.

ODF — the inevitable format?

ODF-icons01.png
[via Bob Sutor]:

From Red Hat Magazine:
Conceived as an open alternative to the proprietary document handling software, which then dominated the world, the driving force behind the ODF was the need for a vendor-neutral document format independent of any single application, readable and writable for all, without any royalty of licensing "encumbrances." It was promoted on the basis that business and taxpayers would save money. An open format would create competition in the document application sphere. All documents could be read and shared by everyone. Nothing could be lost to time or changes in proprietary code or licensing requirements. Matters of great public interest — census data, weather data, public health statistics, investigative reports, court records and basic scientific research, all paid for by taxpayers, would no longer be encoded on a single, proprietary closed-standard format, requiring citizens to pay twice for access to their own information. Using ODF, proponents said, would keep public documents public. — T. Colin Dodd
