Latest Forum Posts

I donated a while back and have used Screenshot Captor on and off.
However I have loved reading the occasional newsletter. Your newsletters are so community spirited, that I enjoy the read even there isn't a topic that I would normally be interested. I find them uplifting, and so was moved to provide a small donation, as I can't imagine the sacrifice you put in to be the glue of the donation coder community. The site is a joy to use. It's very very fast, logical and full of good information. What more could anyone ask for?

Color Theory

kolor.jpg
Found a fascinating color theory tutorial, including links to additional resources and a bibliography:

http://www.worqx.com/color/

This is general stuff, easy to read and organized so that it's amenable to topic hopping.  It's applicable to paper documents, application & web design, or simply making sure your chosen Windows color palette won't give you a siezure.

Simply reading the section about Perceptual Opposites led me to an "aha!" moment, when I finally understood why some colors just look nasty together, like they want to vibrate each other off the screen.  I'd subconciously recognized the phenomenon, but now I know why that happens.

Unfortunately none of this will not stop Mrs. Maximus from painting the kitchen green.

GoodSync free from RoboForm today (not)

Earlier today  I updated my copy of RoboForm. As usual when the installer finished it opened a webpage. On that web page was the following message:

Exclusively for RoboForm Users - Limited Time Only - If You Like RoboForm... You'll LOVE GoodSync! Get GoodSync FREE Today! Fast and Easy File Synchronization & Backup Solution!

I thought OOOO - I always wanted to give that a try so I downloaded it and installed it. I tried to activate the product (since the Help > About page said it was a trial version) but it would not activate (the only code I had was for RoboForm so I assumed that would be the one as it was a special offer for RoboForm users - right). No joy so I just contacted their customer support. Here is there response:

GoodSync Free is really free, but after 30-days of use it has some limitations. You can use it for free after 30-days as well. But if you want to get rid of limitations, please purchase the license and activate it.
Please see the differences between Free and Pro here:
 http://www.goodsync.com/freevpro.html

So in other words the special free offer for loyal RoboForm Pro users is that they can download the same trial version that everyone else gets and it will go to reduced functionality in 30 days (AKA as fucked mode).

I HATE this kind of crap, shoddy, immoral, lying, deceitful, arsehole .... (get my drift) ... marketing...

I used to respect RoboForm - and I will continue to use it because it is the best product - but they will never get another penny from me and I will never recommend their products again.

Free Mahjongg Game?

SNAG-0170.png
Maybe you might like to try MyJongg II.

This is a classic remake of the ancient Mah Jongg solitaire game. Beautiful tile sets, different layouts, sound. We have written a Layout Editor too, and we will release it in the future to help you build your own Layouts!!! Take a look at our future release. Some features do not work yet (like High-Scores).

Seems like a very nice donationware game to me.

Just unzip & run. No installing needed. You can use your own backgrounds if you have any .gif or .bmp files suitable for it.

Nice Blog Essay and Site for Freelancers: 10 Absolute "Nos!" for Freelancers

Screenshot - 11_24_2007 , 7_25_40 PM_thumb.png
Nice looking site and some nice tips on succeeding as a freelancer.

When I first started freelancing as a college student, I was eager to do any website and would say "Yes" to anything, regardless of my skill set or the time involved. It was just nice to know that someone needed me for a skilled task. Unfortunately, I quickly found myself working all the time, eating Ramen noodles, and not getting anywhere in terms of paying off my wonderful college debt. To make things worse, these people were also giving my contact info out to other such people (you know, the lady who has been thinking about selling dog sweaters online and has a $100 budget for an e-commerce site, 1000 brochures, and a guranteed #1 Google search result for the "dog", "sweater", and "love").

Anyways, now four years later, my world (AND financial success) now requires ample use of the answer "No." And here are ten questions I nearly always answer "No" to:

Seriously, wtf is going on with Apple's Mac vs. PC ads?

Screenshot - 11_24_2007 , 6_31_33 PM_thumb.png
We've talked about this before, and my general feeling is just mild annoyance at the cult of apple stuff and the emphasis of apple on marketing and "image".

And unlike some other apple products imho, i think OS X is a quality product.
Furthermore, i do not like MS Vista.

But the latest apple ad i saw was, except for the briefest of mentions, a commercial dedicated totally 100% to making fun of VISTA (and even going so far as to basically recommend XP!).  There was a total lack of any mention of positive features of Apple's product.

Which i found kind of shocking.. Even as someone who dislikes Vista this really took me aback, like wtf is the aim of this -- just to try to increase negative feelings of your competitor?  I have a hard time thinking of other "attack" commercials that didn't at least make a cursory attempt to promote the companies own products..

I really wonder if these ads aren't on one hand really working for Apple, but on the other hand really cementing and increasing an anti-apple feeling in another population of users...

The commercial i'm talking about can be watched on youtube here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=0GWYaviIzCU

note: i don't want this thread to turn into an anti-apple fest, i'm just responding to the oddness of this one particular commercial which i think is different from the other mac-vs-pc ads, which make fun of windows but while playing up the beneficial comparison to apple features, something notably lacking from this commercial. furthermore, i'm not complaining that the add is "unfair" -- i'm just struct by it's unusualness.

authorPOINT Lite Mini-Reviewed

sc1.png
authorPOINT Lite is a program designed for converting PowerPoint files to flash files, to be deployed on the web, or  to anyone who does not currently own PowerPoint.

Who is this app designed for:
This application is designed for users who wish to deploy their PowerPoint presentations to the web or want to share their presentations with others (who do not have PowerPoint, or not using a PowerPoint viewer). Also, the Save for web feature in PowerPoint, generates pages that only function correctly in Internet Explorer.

The Good
- Easy to use interface
- Manage all of the converted presentations in one interface (left pane)
- Keeps all animation effects that were applied
- Context menu added in Windows Explorer for PPT files

The needs improvement section
- To find the files to upload to web, you will have to navigate to: C:\Documents and Settings\your username\My Documents\authorGEN Projects - no direct way to see the files.
- No way to edit the individual colors of objects in the program
