NoClose gets the job doneThe lightweight application disables the X button in the Windows titlebar for the windows you select. Select the window you want to lock and then hit CTRL+1 to lock and unlock the window. You can also add rules for Windows so that NoClose will remember which windows you want locked. While locking your work station when you're away is the best way to keep things just as you left them, NoClose is a great solution to keep an errant mouse click or moment of thoughtlessness from closing a window or application you need open.

Mini-review: LineByter - Find and Extract Patterns (emails, etc) from Text FilesLineByter is a utility designed to find and extract patterns from text files.
It's a brand new (free) program coded by DonationCoder member Carl Danley (CodeByter) and released today. It includes some unique features like duplicate removal, the ability to specify multiple match and reject patterns, and the ability to save and load profiles, that make it ideal for doing repeated things like extracting emails or urls from text files. Motivation for the program When we send out the DonationCoder mailing list, a certain number of the newsletter emails bounce back each month as undeliverable. I use phplist to manage the web mailing list but lately what I've been doing is exporting these bounced emails from my email program and running an email extraction utility on the exported email to get a list of email addresses from these emails, and then feeding them into a script that turns off email notification for those users on the forum whose emails can be found. In the past i've been using a now-discontinued utility designed specifically to extract emails. But it's less than ideal. It's a big clunky, it sometimes finds things that aren't emails, and sometimes misses real emails. It also has a bad user interface and doesn't remove duplicates. After i would run this utility i would bring the output file into a text editor, sort and remove duplicates, and then go through and remove certain emails, like those that are really donationcoder.com addresses and a a few known fake email address patterns that seem to show up regularly. SO that's why I have been wanting for a while a little utility that is better at extracting emails and doing some of the things automatically that i have been doing manually. Of course I could have written a little perl or python script for it, but i am a big fan of custom gui tools for such things. LineByter is the program that emerged from my discussions with Carl about this idea. It's actually a much more general purpose program that can extract and reject all kinds of regular expression patterns, BUT it's also designed to be really easy to use and is focused specifically enough on the general workflow that i described above so that it's a real joy to use for this kind of stuff. Features Some key features of the program:

IDEA : script which popup browse dialog and generate shortcutWhat I'm looking is pretty simple (I think) A tool which pop up the user a browse dialog like this the user choose a folder, and it generate a shortcut (on his desktop) and add the choosen folder's path to the shortcut Example : c:\app\app.exe path of the folder*.jpg path of the folder /someparameter /someparameter Parameters in blue never change, they are the same for all shortcut created, only the red change (I would also like to be able to specify an icon for the generated shortcut, but it's absolutely not a priority ^^) Click here to read more and download the utility written by DC Member Lanux128 |

Linux is Not WindowsI came across this today and wondered why is this page not linked to, anywhere on this forum, that I could find.
It's a bit old (2005), but still a great essay about why Windows users have such a hard time making the switch to Linux, why things don't work how Windows users expect, why so many say that "Linux isn't ready for the desktop", etc. I think if all Windows & Linux users read it, the "war" will be over, and both sides will have won. http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm |

New birdy comic website from nudone and timnsjust a quick announcemet for our new comic strip website. as you'll see, the characters are probably related to Cody, or are his friends, at least. who knows, maybe Cody will make an appearance. the work is a collaboration between me and another DC member, timns. there are plenty of strips lined up and ready to go, updates will be on mondays and thursdays. the website itself is not 100% finished but it's close enough for the moment (there's plenty of stuff that needs cleaning or tweaking underneath it all). i hope you have time to have a look and become a regular reader. there's the usual RSS and email subscriptions services available. here's the link: http://www.head-in-the-clouds.com

Digging for Snails...and the Hidden InternetRecently, while I was having a lot of trouble getting the Digg site to work on my old slow computer, I found a couple of alternatives that could be very helpful to anyone in the same situation. Digg, Digg Lite, Digg Ultra-Lite Taking it a step further, I wrote another article that will be of use to anyone struggling with an old slow computer on the internet, or even a newer one on a slow dialup connection. There is an entire hidden internet out there, that is friendly to old machines and slow connections! It's a case of where new technology gives new life to the old. And if you surf the web on your phone or PDA, you can help others by providing some information that you might be more familiar with, and maybe even pick up a few links for yourself.
