Drive Dock: Turn bare drives into floppies

0dual_sata_dock1.jpg
If you've upgraded the hard drive in your laptop or desktop machine, then you've got a naked, homeless hard drive sitting around in one of your drawers. Put that puppy to use by plugging it into ThinkGeek's External USB SATA Drive Dock and boom, you've got extra storage without the enclosure.

I've got several old hard drives lying around with great stuff on them, and I can plug them into the dock as needed. At $40, it's worth a shot. And just so you know, there are tons of these from other companies on Newegg.com.

Web-app security scanners for web developers and serveradmins (nice review)

blog clipart
In today's "web 2.0" world, web applications become more and more complex, and thus it becomes more and more common for some very nasty security bugs to be implemented.

As a web developer, being able to scan your own software for common things like SQL injection bugs or cross-site scripting vulnerabilities, may be a useful tool in your tool belt.

As a server administrator, being able to scan your server, and your user's sites for these problems is also a handy thing to be able to do.

There is quite a few of these web vulnerability scanners available commercially, and I had always wondered how effective they are. Someone on the penetration testing mailing list wrote up a very very nice review (PDF) of major vendors of this type of software.

Since it would be of interest of users of web-applications as well as developers and fellow server admins, I figured I'd share this here.

From the report it seems that these things are pretty good at detecting common stuff like sql-injection (report shows that all sql-injection vulnerabilities were detected by all the tested software), but you can definitively not rely on them solely for security testing. (Which makes sense imo, since it's a very complex problem which seems hard to implement generic heuristic scanners for.)

Fun/Funny Videos Teaching how to Program an Ancient PDP-11

Very fun cool stuff..

from http://www.boingboin...-to-program-a-p.html:
DePauw University presents a series of videos on how to program the PDP-11. They present all of the steps: toggling a loader, reading and punching paper tape and running an assembler. A must-see for retrocomputing neophytes! Just one Jon-Lovitz-warning: ACTING!

Codex Transportica -- My Favorite Entry

Screenshot - 1_27_2009 , 11_16_10 AM_thumb.png
Most DC members are aware that Nick Pearson, the brilliant artist who created the mascot for this site (Cody), teamed up with Tim Smith (who writes the text) to work on a couple of other sites.  Head in the Clouds is their whimsical and light-hearted cartoon about two funny birds and and Codex Transportica is their darker more moody vision of devices from an alternate reality.

Anyway, what i wanted to mention today is that Tim has written my favorite entry so far in the Codex Transportica this week, and I loved it so much i just had to share it and urge you to stop by the Codex Transportica site if you have't yet:

"And so it was that once again Britannia was able to look beyond its own borders to help those less fortunate than itself. The Ministry of Amelioration soon became established as a leading light in this field, bringing ruined countries back from the brink with its combination of strict but fair intervention, firm but just government, and local inhabitants’ terror of mutant giant babies..."

2008: A Year of Coding Snacks at DonationCoder.com

blog clipart
One of the best things about this forum is watching the activity on the Coding Snacks section as people post small ideas and requests and programmers stop by and implement them.

But it's also hard to keep track of everything created and present it in a way that others can locate.  The best solution would probably be for coders to create a little web page for each tool they make (DC is happy to provide web space just ask).

We do however try to keep a page listing all of the finished coding snacks and links to the discussion and download threads, and you can view that here:

My friend and I used to have a term for when we were running low on money and had to be careful about what we spent it on, it was called going into "Frugality Mode".

With the global economy heading into the toilet, what are your tips for surviving a prolonged period of existence in "Frugality Mode" ?
