A Win-Win Situation
I heard about your web site after searching out URLSniffer [URL Snooper], seemed like a great bit of software and I wanted to reward the developer by paying for it. Not only did he get rewarded but so did I in getting all the other great software that you guys have produced, a win win situation I guess.

Would someone mind recommending a good laser printer?

blog clipart
A DC member asks:

"I'm going to google and newegg, and as usual, it's hard to judge based on that.  So once again, I'm turning to my favorite forum.  OK, here are my requirements:

Price:  I don't know.  Not too expensive.  Let's keep it under $400.  I know that's a lot for a black/white laser printer.  I'm just trying to emphasize that I don't mind paying for a truly better machine.

Duplex: I NEED automatic duplex.  I don't want any manual feeding or anything.  I read some reviews, and even the ones that could do auto-duplex seemed to have some issues, like paper getting jammed a lot, etc.  So if any of you have had a really positive experience with an auto-duplex printer, please let me know."

Zen Magnets vs Buckyballs Comparison/Voicemail-Reply Video

It brings a warm glow to my soul when i see a little guy fights back against the bullying legal intimidation of the big companies.  If you feel the same way this might make you smile.

In this youtubed open letter, a representative from Zen Magnets (small-fry makers of little round powerful magnets you can use to make interesting shapes) replies to a legal threat from Buckyballs (leading makers of little round powerful magnets you can use to make interesting shapes). It starts with a recorded voicemail from Buckyballs CEO Jake Bronstein threatening to sue Zen Magnets for selling a kit containing both Buckyballs and Zen Magnets on eBay with the claim that Zen Magnets are manufactured to a higher tolerance, are stronger, and have a brighter finish. From there, the Zen Magnets rep does a wonderful job illustrating the validity of his claims -- and making Buckyballs look like an anti-competitive bully who fights dirty with threats instead of superior products.

JayIsGames.Com Casual Gameplay Design Competition #9 - november deadline

cgdc9_494x450.jpg
The latest JayIsGames.com game coding competition has just opened.. I'd love to hear that a DC member was entering something!

Design a browser game that incorporates the theme (see below). Since you will have just 2 months to complete your design, simple ideas are probably the best way to go. You may use any browser-based technology platform you are comfortable with (Flash, Unity, Javascript/HTML5, etc.). If we can embed your finished game file on our competition page, you may use that platform to design and develop your game.

For the 9th Casual Gameplay Design Competition, we are calling for entries designed to incorporate this theme: FRIENDS. You are free to interpret that any way you choose..

http://jayisgames.co...gn_competition_9.php

1st place: $1,500; 2nd place: $1,000; 3rd place: $500
The deadline for entries is Monday, November 15, 2010 at 11:59PM (GMT-5:00).

Was Stuxnet Worm Built to Attack Iran's Nuclear Program?

Screenshot - 9_21_2010 , 5_12_00 PM_thumb.png
Fascinating stuff:

A highly sophisticated computer worm [Stuxnet] that has spread through Iran, Indonesia and India was built to destroy operations at one target: possibly Iran's Bushehr nuclear reactor....
Experts had first thought that Stuxnet was written to steal industrial secrets -- factory formulas that could be used to build counterfeit products. But Langner found something quite different. The worm actually looks for very specific Siemens settings -- a kind of fingerprint that tells it that it has been installed on a very specific Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) device -- and then it injects its own code into that system. Because of the complexity of the attack, the target "must be of extremely high value to the attacker," Langner wrote in his analysis.

Why Trying to be Productive is a Huge Waste of Time

Screenshot - 9_20_2010 , 5_28_36 AM.png
Most of the time, trying to be productive is pointless. In fact, it’s a big, fat waste of time. It’s kind of lame when time management (productivity techniques & hacks) ends up killing your time, huh? Here’s why this happens…

For a long time I’ve thought about why people are so crazy about productivity. I’ve wondered why I am so concerned with accomplishing and completing. I mean, when you get to the point of looking for more time-efficient ways to fold underwear, you might have a problem.

So why does productivity matter, anyway? What’s so important about achieving?

The answer… not much.

The feeling of needing to accomplish something stems from dissatisfaction with the present. With this mindset, the whole idea of achieving is to become something. On the surface, it may seem like you’re doing something positive, but there’s a subtle undercurrent of rejection of what is. Rejection of yourself.

Flowchart for Choosing a Typeface

crop.png
Pretty cool -- poster available too.

So you need a typeface is an alternative way on how to choose fonts (or just be inspired) for a specific project, not just by browsing through the pages of FontBook. The list is (very loosely) based on the top 50 of the "Die 100 besten schriften".
