Word Lens goes viral

Taking us one step closer to Star Trek's "universal translator":

But will it eventually translate a page from a German book into English?

[via engadget]:
Augmented reality and optical character recognition have just come into their own, beautifully intertwined into an instant translation app for the iPhone. Download Word Lens, pay $4.99 for a language pack, then point it at a sign and watch as it replaces every word with one in your native tongue. It's a little bit like Pleco, but without the whole language learning stuff. We just gave it a spin, and while it's not quite as accurate as this video claims, it's still breathtaking to behold -- especially as it doesn't require an internet connection to do any lookup. Sadly, it only translates to and from English and Spanish for now. Still, Babelfish, eat your heart out.

Your software — screencasting — why do it?

Smashing Magazine has a decent, short, and common-sensical article about screencasting. It covers some do's and dont's and points out why a good screencast can be more important to your project than you might think. It's a five-minute read, tops.

DC Member: Selling off Veign assets

Longtime DC Member and Friend Chris Hanscom posted today about his desire to sell the rights to his desktop application source code and software:

"I've decided to sell of all of the applications developed by Veign.

What I'm selling:
- All applications
- All Source code and application assets (graphics, installers and information)
- Cfont Pro's website: http://www.cfontpro.com/

There will be no restrictions once the sale is completed.  You will be able to do what you want with the applications.  Currently they are all donationware but if you want to make them into shareware applications that would be your choice.

I've thought about turning them into Open Source but I don't think that would work with these applications.  Hate to see the 1000's of hours of work go down the drain because my focus has shifted to web development only.

Feel free to ask any questions you want in this thread except price (that will be discussed in private via email)."
