Micropayments now officially supported by PayPal

blog clipart
PayPal now officially supports 3 types of micropayments, which include (1) one-time micropayments, (2) pay-as-you-go, and (3) subscription models. One can make payments with two clicks of a mouse without leaving the vendor's website.

Yahoo news article:

PayPal wants to be the go-to company for digital goods in a world where micropayments are becoming increasingly popular for mobile apps, tablet versions of newspapers, and music. The company announced its micropayment system called PayPal Digital Goods is no longer in preview mode and now available to any seller of digital content.

PayPal Digital Goods allows for two-click payments without having to leave the originating site or service. The service has a low transaction fee threshold (5 percent plus 5 cents for purchases under $12), and offers one-time micropayments, pay-as-you-go, and subscription models.

Thought this was quite nice for an on-the-fly spell-checker, thesaurus, translator too.

How did WordPress win?

Screenshot - 2_10_2011 , 6_08_08 PM_thumb.png
Interesting article from Movable Type, a blogging system that was once as popular as WordPress but lost the popularity contest..

Believe it or not, members of the Movable Type community often wonder the same thing. Most recently someone in the ProNet community, frustrated by their experience with WordPress, asked the question: how on Earth did WordPress win the battle over Movable Type?" The question was rhetorical, but sparked a very interesting dialog in our community.

In the past I have refrained from answering such questions, or if I did, I would not respond publicly, for reasons I can only attribute to a mentality that was beaten into me while I worked at Six Apart.. This time however, "to hell with it" I say. Let's talk about this. Let's see what lessons can be learned from WordPress so that others seeking to build a successful product can learn from it.

CPU Question: More Mhz per core or more cores?

blog clipart
Hi folks,

I'm building a PC for my sister, and it's been quite a few years (ancient history in internet time) since I built a PC (I still have a single core machine). I put together what I think is a rather nice PC for her but her brother-in-law insists its inferior because I used an AMD processor instead of Intel. Unfortunately I don't have a list of what he's offered to build for her, but it did bring to my mind the question about cycles vs. cores.

What would be best in the scenario of someone who mostly uses their computer for basic word processing and internet, but also does photography and photoshop, so sometimes has to handle image processing stuff of multiple large files? (She has a 10.2MP camera and takes all her photos in RAW format.) Is it worth it to stick with an Intel 4-core machine that has a few hundred more Mhz per core or is it better to go with an AMD 6-core?

My thinking is that a couple hundred Mhz per core won't match the extra power provided by two extra cores. But on the other hand my sister might not do enough things on the PC to utilize some of the cores, which would make them sit there idle and they'd essentially be wasted.

Opinions?
