A Good Windows Tips Newsletter Using the Pay-what-you-want Model

blog clipart
In a recent post Jimdoria mentioned a newsletter he loves called "The Windows Secrets Newsletter", which has a rather cool pro-upgrade policy:

Gratuitous plug for something I love: The Windows Secrets newsletter is an awesome source of info, and its payment scheme is similar to DC - you can get a basic version of the newsletter for free. If you upgrade to the "paid" version (paying whatever you think the newsletter is worth) you get a much fuller-featured newletter and some extra bonuses too, like downloadable e-books.

Nice to see this financing model getting more use - let's show some solidarity!

Best Places to Get The Real Scoop on Web Hosts

mycaps Screenshot - 001 , 03_21_PM , Aug 29 2006_thumb.png
There are sooooo many different web hosting companies, whether you are looking for a $2/month throwaway account or a $2000/month dedicated super server.  How's a person to choose between companies and get some good information?

There are a huge number of fake pay-per-promotion "top hosting company" websites to watch out for - so it's a particularly hard problem lately.

One of the best sites on the web for finding out about companies and dishing the dirt on them is the WebHostingTalk Forums:

Borland's Museum of Antique Software

Perhaps it's fitting that as the C++ Builder contest is drawing to a close, Gothic and I were reminscing about programming in the "old days" of Borland's turbo pascal and turbo C and of console mode programs using the ibm pc's ascii character set which seemed designed with gamers in mind, and I stumbled across this nice collection of old Borland software:

Tales from the Proprietary: OSS is good for your business model?

blog clipart
Why proprietary software is dangerous for business-critical applications.

But the real point here is that an entire medium-sized company's executive staff has learned a hard lesson about the dangers of proprietary software, and members of that staff who previously resisted open source are now ready to consider it -- and for business continuity reasons rather than as a money-saving measure, no less.
