May we recommend..
When I look back at the blog items I post linking to interesting developer essays and articles, many of them are originally from osnews.com. OSNews is a frequently updated blog that posts lots of small items every day. While nominally about operating systems, they really cover a much broader domain including websites and technology companies. They do an outstanding job of bringing early attention to interesting technology essays that I don't see mentioned elsewhere.

A "Wiki Word" add-in for MS Word?Does it exist? Would it be hard to implement?
Managing hyperlinks in word processors can be quite a pain. A system similar to the one wikis use (the famous CamelCased or "[[ ]]" Wiki Words) would probably be convenient. Anybody knows if such a functionality can be implemented (through a plugin or a macro) to MS Word (or other word processors - TextMaker, OpenOffice.org...)? |

Suffering online status anxietyi'd like to propose a new classification for people that are anxious about not having a recognised online presence.
just as westerners are increasingly suffering from 'status anxiety' (or so we are told) i wonder if many 'netizens' are suffering from an online equivalent. every man (and woman) and his dog appears to think they have good reason to create a blog and start filling the internet with their profound insights - so profound that several thousand other people have already blogged about it. i know, i know, my complaints are just as hackneyed as what i'm describing. but i feel i'm suffering from this 'online status anxiety'. i read blog after blog after blog. i don't know who these people are - i may not even look at who the author is. one article melts into another article on another blog - the only author i recognise is the internet or, to be more precise, the computer i'm sat next to. my machine is the author; feeding me this endless stream of words. amongst these merging faceless blogs i feel left out. i know deep down that someone created the blogs, they must be important - crucially, they must be more important than me. i need to write a blog just like them - it's unavoidable, i have broadband - i won't exist until my online inane ranting is recognised by at least 3 complete and utter strangers. embrace my bloggy goodness and swoon at my spam free comments section. anyone else suffering like i am? i don't believe i'm the only one. [dislaimer: this is in no way related to wtfcody.com - that's a real website thing with a real purpose. honest.] |

Bjarne Stroustrup (creator of C++) talks about the development of C++0xBjarne Stroustrup (creator of C++) talks about the development of C++0x, the next generation of C++ standard. This is a 1+ hour video of a talk. A good programming language is far more than a simple collection of features. My ideal is to provide a set of facilities that smoothly work together to support design and programming styles of a generality beyond my imagination. Here, I briefly outline rules of thumb (guidelines, principles) that are being applied in the design of C++0x. Then, I present the state of the standards process (we are aiming for C++09) and give examples of a few of the proposals such as concepts, generalized initialization, being considered in the ISO C++ standards committee. Since there are far more proposals than could be presented in an hour, I'll take questions. http://www.csclub.uw...20An%20Overview.html
