Ran into this website over at gHacks.com. If you are interested in hurricane info (or need to be because of where you live) check out Stormpulse at: http://www.stormpulse.com - an excellent site that is continuously updated with the latest storm data.

Google Chrome Considered Harmful? Long essay from OSNews

Screenshot - 9_3_2008 , 2_37_02 PM_thumb.png
A negative take on Chrome from OSNews.  Not saying i agree with all of it, but i think it's worth sharing:

Google Chrome Considered Harmful
http://www.osnews.co...e_Considered_Harmful

..in the following text I will demonstrate that Chrome [based on what we are allowed to know] puts strain on the Designer and Developer communities, is not innovative (save for one feature), and copies ideas liberally from Google's worst enemy.

And google jumps on the apple marketing bandwagon:
My greatest problem with the cartoon strip is that while it's supposed to explain how Chrome works, it really explains how all major browsers work, implying that these features were invented for Chrome alone.

This is the #1 trick apple uses to sell their products (in my view), and i find it depressing.

Samarost Developers Working on a Full-sized Adventure Game: Machinarium

Screenshot - 9_3_2008 , 3_55_13 AM_thumb.png
Way back in 2005, DC member m_s told us about an incredibly beautiful and charming flash hunt-and-click adventure game called Samarost.  Samarost 2 is easily still one of the best and most charming flash games of its kind.

The developers have released a few follow ups which have all been good.  Now comes word they are working on a full sized commercial adventure game called Machinarium set to be released in early 2009.

There is a video preview on the site and it does definitely has that samarost2 look and feel.  Can't wait!

Self-destructing web message

recorder.jpg
Cool:

DestructingMessage.com is a free service which enables you to send a self-destructing message to someone. This means, once they read the message they will no longer be able to read it again after the timer has reached zero. This ensures your message is read by no one but the reader and all evidence of the message is erased. Messages are also anonymous unless you add any identifiable information to your message.

USBDLM -- USB Drive Letter Manager

blog clipart
I downloaded this program a while ago because it's been mentioned quite a few times. Never installed it.

Finally tried it yesterday. Wish I did that before! I love it.

USBDLM is a Windows service that gives control over Window's drive letter assignment for USB drives. Running as service makes it independent of the logged on user's privileges, so there is no need to give the users the privilege to change drive letters.
It automatically solves conflicts between USB drives and network or subst drives of the currently logged on user.
Furthermore you can define new default letters for USB drives and much more.

So many times, after using many different USB drives (HDs, USB sticks...), windows gets all mixed up and starts assigning unusual letters to my drive, which makes backuping, errrrrr, an interesting experience.

In some occasions, I had to reboot to be able to restore the letters to their usual drives (yup : sometimes, it's just impossible to reassign letters using "computer management", as you might all know).

And this is where USBDLM does its magic. Assign letters to specific drives (defined either by their size or by Device ID, for example), and bingo. My USB stick is always U:, and all other drives don't steal each other's letters anymore.

You just need to edit an INI file to configure the app. Not as user friendly as some would like, but quite simple in reality.

Try it out if you haven't! It works very well. Free for private use.

"Know someone who wants to learn to program? Paul Graham advises programmer wannabes to check out The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Programming on the Web from AppJet, which aims to be 'the funnest and easiest way for a beginner to get started programming.' Setting the guide apart from other tutorials is the ability to edit and run any of the all-Javascript examples directly in your browser. Newcomers to programming and experienced developers alike can also publish their AppJet creations on the web. Sure beats GE BASIC on the General Electric Time-Sharing Service!"
