Lessons from 2 years without Windows

Screenshot - 12_11_2008 , 23_36_22_thumb.png
Derrick Sodobash, an American freelance journalist working in China who, in other life, was a well-known translator in the romhacking scene, writes an in depth article over the pleasures and (specially) the pains of running Linux full-time and trying to adapt the OS to fulfill his needs. Note that while the article reads like Derrick wants to escape from Linux at all costs due to the difficulties he encounters, he's still a committed Linux user.

Although I know it's beating a dead horse, most of the other articles of this kind I encountered usually stop at everyday computing instead of going to the core, which I think make this one specially worthwhile. Now, wouldn't it be nice to read a similar article mixing OSes other than Windows and Linux?

Coding Snack: Auto Resize Taskbar

blog clipart
there's a time when we open too many programs they will start to filling up our taskbar then we are force to resize the taskbar just so those taskbar buttons become manageable again. Can you write a program to automate this when there are too many taskbar buttons in the taskbar and resize it back to the normal size when there are just few taskbar buttons after we have close some of them.

Amazing games from coder Kenta Cho

mcd_1.gif
Browsing through my Xubuntu repositories, I kept seeing games written by this guy, so I decided to try a few of his games.
Amazing! Fast-paced with solid game play and flipped out graphics. Lots of Windows versions too.
Check it out:
from Wikipedia
ABA Games is a Japanese creator of freeware video games run by Kenta Cho. Cho is most famous for his shoot 'em ups, mostly featuring abstract reinterpretations of retro classics with each game having a specific unique feature and using randomly generated levels. He also created BulletML, a custom markup language for defining 2D shooter firing patterns, which has been used in a variety of games. Most of his games were written in the D programming language and use Simple DirectMedia Layer for graphics. Macworld described Kenta Cho as one of today’s best independent game programmers.

Coding Snack: Focus get  (and keep, for a while)

blog clipart
I know this idea is floating around on the boards but I haven't been able to get it working properly.

Basically, I have 2 text windows open - one I want to type into all the time, and one I want to type in for short periods of time.
EG: Dreamweaver and an IM chat.

I want to be able to have the main window (dreamweaver) under focus by default, but I want to be able to click in the chatbox (or any other) and for as long as I am typing there it keeps focus. After an extended period of non-activity (eg, no more typing, say, 5~8 seconds) I want to switch back to the main window (returning to work)

Reach more and download the coding snacks written by DC members to do this..
