Making a standalone mirc floppy/cd for travel

Top  Previous  Next

If you are traveling, you may want to prepare a stand-alone floppy or cd so that you can us mirc and mircryption from another computer without having to install any software.

If you make a cd rom of mirc to carry with you, you can simply burn the entire contents of your mirc directory onto the cdrom and run mirc from the cdrom drive.

If you want to create a floppy version, you will have to be more selective about what you copy and you will have to compress your mirc executable:

1.Create a temporary directory to prepare your mirc floppy, and begin by copying into it the entire contents of your mirc directory.
2.Download the free UPX utility from http://upx.sourceforge.net and run it on your copied version of your mirc.exe by executing from the commandline: upx mirc.exe
3.Delete the mircryption.chm file from your copied mirc directory (unless you think you will need it!) and go into your copied mircryption directory and delete all files except those that are required, specifically mircryption.mrc, mircryption.dll, and MircryptionKeys.txt.  If you need access to mircryptionboard functions then include mcboard.mrc.
4.This should give you a cleaned up copy of your mirc directory that is less than 1mb in size, easily fiting onto a floppy.

Keep in mind that Internet Cafes may have (possible hardware based) keylogging and other recording software on them, so that it may be impossible for you to prevent what you type and what you see on your screen from being recorded.
